Psalm 34

1 I will bless the Lord at all times;
his praise shall continually be in my mouth.

and delivered me from all my fears.
5 Those who look to him are radiant,

Psalm 19:8-10, 14 ~ meditation

Southern Steps

The flight of stairs leading to the main entrances of the Temple Mount was 200 feet wide. Excavators uncovered the easternmost part of this staircase with its alternating long and short steps.Suggesting the fifteen long steps may have been one of the locations where pilgrims sang the fifteen Psalms of Ascent (120-34) as they went up to worship. How marvelous.

Steps leading to the original entrance to the temple mount and to the Second Temple. It is certain that Jesus climbed these steps when He visited the Temple in Jerusalem. Pilgrims come from all over the world to see the southern Temple mount.

Psalm 19:8-10, 14

8 the precepts of the Lord are right,
rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the Lord is pure,
enlightening the eyes;
9 the fear of the Lord is clean,
enduring forever;
the rules of the Lord are true,
and righteous altogether.
10 More to be desired are they than gold,
even much fine gold;
sweeter also than honey
and drippings of the honeycomb.

14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
be acceptable in your sight,
O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.


These are wonderful words on the steps to the Temple. Well worth listening to.

Exodus 19, 20 ~ distance

The beautiful chapel photographed above is not the one we visited last year while college hunting for our oldest son. (It is not the college he chose to apply to.) We travelled across many states to see a college my son read about and interested him. One of the factors was the college review, indicating a real interest in christian growth. We were dismayed to learn, as we toured the campus, that the guide was not going to show us the famous chapel. We were puzzled about that. The handsome guide, from our part of the country, explained the chapel would be used for entertainment with games like dungeons and dragons and Harry Potter masquerade parties. Later, we read in the paper that the college president had determined that the sight of the cross offended many people.

Exodus 19 and 20 brought this memory back. The people, the children of Israel, were so eager to be with the Lord, that the Lord had to make provisions for their safety. Remember, even Moses could not look upon the Glory of God.

At our Winter Conference in January 2008, one of the speakers showed the statistic: there are 360,000 churches in the USA, if every church had 300ish more members, every person in the United States would have a church home. Remember to pray for the United States, that the churches would be able to share God's love with the people.

Exodus 19

1 In the third month after the Israelites left Egypt—on the very day—they came to the Desert of Sinai. 2 After they set out from Rephidim, they entered the Desert of Sinai, and Israel camped there in the desert in front of the mountain.

3 Then Moses went up to God, and the LORD called to him from the mountain and said, "This is what you are to say to the house of Jacob and what you are to tell the people of Israel: 4 'You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself. 5 Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, 6 you [a] will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.' These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites."

7 So Moses went back and summoned the elders of the people and set before them all the words the LORD had commanded him to speak. 8 The people all responded together, "We will do everything the LORD has said." So Moses brought their answer back to the LORD.

9 The LORD said to Moses, "I am going to come to you in a dense cloud, so that the people will hear me speaking with you and will always put their trust in you." Then Moses told the LORD what the people had said.

10 And the LORD said to Moses, "Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow. Have them wash their clothes 11 and be ready by the third day, because on that day the LORD will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. 12 Put limits for the people around the mountain and tell them, 'Be careful that you do not go up the mountain or touch the foot of it. Whoever touches the mountain shall surely be put to death. 13 He shall surely be stoned or shot with arrows; not a hand is to be laid on him. Whether man or animal, he shall not be permitted to live.' Only when the ram's horn sounds a long blast may they go up to the mountain."

14 After Moses had gone down the mountain to the people, he consecrated them, and they washed their clothes. 15 Then he said to the people, "Prepare yourselves for the third day. Abstain from sexual relations."

16 On the morning of the third day there was thunder and lightning, with a thick cloud over the mountain, and a very loud trumpet blast. Everyone in the camp trembled. 17 Then Moses led the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. 18 Mount Sinai was covered with smoke, because the LORD descended on it in fire. The smoke billowed up from it like smoke from a furnace, the whole mountain [b] trembled violently, 19 and the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder. Then Moses spoke and the voice of God answered him. [c]

20 The LORD descended to the top of Mount Sinai and called Moses to the top of the mountain. So Moses went up 21 and the LORD said to him, "Go down and warn the people so they do not force their way through to see the LORD and many of them perish. 22 Even the priests, who approach the LORD, must consecrate themselves, or the LORD will break out against them."

23 Moses said to the LORD, "The people cannot come up Mount Sinai, because you yourself warned us, 'Put limits around the mountain and set it apart as holy.' "

24 The LORD replied, "Go down and bring Aaron up with you. But the priests and the people must not force their way through to come up to the LORD, or he will break out against them."

25 So Moses went down to the people and told them.

18 When the people saw the thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet and saw the mountain in smoke, they trembled with fear. They stayed at a distance 19 and said to Moses, "Speak to us yourself and we will listen. But do not have God speak to us or we will die."

20 Moses said to the people, "Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning."

21 The people remained at a distance, while Moses approached the thick darkness where God was.

22 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Tell the Israelites this: 'You have seen for yourselves that I have spoken to you from heaven: 23 Do not make any gods to be alongside me; do not make for yourselves gods of silver or gods of gold.
24 " 'Make an altar of earth for me and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, [b] your sheep and goats and your cattle. Wherever I cause my name to be honored, I will come to you and bless you. 25 If you make an altar of stones for me, do not build it with dressed stones, for you will defile it if you use a tool on it. 26 And do not go up to my altar on steps, lest your nakedness be exposed on it.'

Matthew 9:9-13 ~ His disciples

- 16th Century, Flemish Renaissance Painter. Jan Sanders van Hemessen specialized in scenes of human character, normally religious scenes. His style helped found the Flemish traditions of genre painting.

Painters specializing in portraying scenes from the bible have offered God a powerful tool of worship with their lives. They put hours into making the bible come to life.

Matthew 9:9-13

9 As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him.

10 And as Jesus reclined at table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and his disciples. 11 And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 12 But when he heard it, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 13 Go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Mark 4 ~ seeds on earth

Isaiah 6:8 Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.

Sometimes we, the followers of Jesus Christ, are the seeds.

Who are we called to? The people who seek God.

Acts 17: 22
Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: "Men of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious. 23 For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO AN UNKNOWN GOD. Now what you worship as something unknown I am going to proclaim to you.


Pilgrims to Israel: viewing the Holy Land by boat on the Sea of Galilee

Mark 4

1 Again he began to teach beside the sea. And a very large crowd gathered about him, so that he got into a boat and sat in it on the sea, and the whole crowd was beside the sea on the land. 2 And he was teaching them many things in parables, and in his teaching he said to them: 3 “Listen! A sower went out to sow. 4 And as he sowed, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured it. 5 Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it did not have much soil, and immediately it sprang up, since it had no depth of soil. 6 And when the sun rose, it was scorched, and since it had no root, it withered away. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no grain. 8 And other seeds fell into good soil and produced grain, growing up and increasing and yielding thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold.” 9 And he said, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

“they may indeed see but not perceive,
and may indeed hear but not understand,
lest they should turn and be forgiven.”

13 And he said to them, “Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables? 14 The sower sows the word. 15 And these are the ones along the path, where the word is sown: when they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the word that is sown in them. 16 And these are the ones sown on rocky ground: the ones who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with joy. 17 And they have no root in themselves, but endure for a while; then, when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately they fall away. 18 And others are the ones sown among thorns. 26 And he said, “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground. 27 He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how. 28 The earth produces by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. 29 But when the grain is ripe, at once he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.”

30 And he said, “With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable shall we use for it? 31 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when sown on the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth, 32 yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes larger than all the garden plants and puts out large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.”

Psalm 1 ~ Blessed

The sermon for Ash Wednesday found Starbuck's poster of a large tree that says: the deeper the root, the farther the reach. Psalm 1 also says this; with God all things are possible. Lent's season reminds us that although we have weaknesses, flaws and sins, God gave us His Son. Jesus knew all about our human nature, but He chose to give us the gift of eternal life in His kingdom. God makes the impossible, possible ~ perishable and weak becomes eternal and cherished.

Psalm 1

1 Blessed is the man [1]
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
2 but his delight is in the law [2] of the Lord,
and on his law he meditates day and night.

3 He is like a tree
planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers.
4 The wicked are not so,

The Synagogue of Capernaum. An Aramaic inscription on one of the broken columns records the name of the donor, "Halfu, son of Zebida". These names in the Greek form (Alphaeus and Zebedee) are mentioned in the New Testament. Jesus Christ's Disciples, James and John, were sons of Zebedee. The New Testament calls them "sons of Thunder".

Psalm 67 ~ May the peoples praise you, O God

When the Lord gave us Psalm 67, He gave us a tool to pray for others and ourselves. As Psalm 67 is read, we can place the name of the person, or church, prayed for in "us & you". May the Lord bless and strengthen the churches proclaiming Jesus Christ. May the faith, hope and love of the Word of God go out to the ends of the earth.

Mark 5:1-20 ~ all men marveled

Jesus reminds us "how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you." This crowd of people gathered in the Philippines in 2008 to: go barefoot as a sign of humility, to take up one's cross and trials in life in imitation of Christ, remember a healing from Jesus, remember tragedies avoided by the grace of the Lord & remember the blessings of life given by Jesus.

Mark 4:26-34 ~ When planted

So Gideon went into his house and prepared a kid, and unleavened cakes from an ephah of flour; the meat he put in a basket, and the broth he put in a pot, and brought them to him under the oak and presented them. The angel of God said to him, "Take the meat and the unleavened cakes, and put them on this rock, and pour out the broth." And he did so. Then the angel of the Lord reached out the tip of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the meat and the unleavened cakes; and fire sprang up from the rock and consumed the meat and the unleavened cakes; and the angel of the Lord vanished from his sight. Gideon felt anonymous and weak. God saw Gideon as he would become with God's help. God sees the potential in us, He wants to be our Father.

2 Samuel 2: 36 All the people took note and were pleased; indeed, everything the king did pleased them. 37 So on that day all the people and all Israel knew that the king had no part in the murder of Abner son of Ner.

38 Then the king said to his men, "Do you not realize that a prince and a great man has fallen in Israel this day? 39 And today, though I am the anointed king, I am weak, and these sons of Zeruiah are too strong for me. May the LORD repay the evildoer according to his evil deeds!"


Nehemiah 6:9

In our winter conference of 2008 in Dallas, Texas; people gathered from all over God's creation. 14 Archbishops from Africa, Asia, England and up to 1,700 to remind each other The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand. One of the bishops has been a bishop born and raised in the United Kingdom and now is a missonary out of Africa, placed as a missionary back in England.

The blind see, the deaf hear and the poor have good news preached to them ~ this is a global community.

The planners of the convention hoped for 20 or more people to show up interested in planning a new church, over six times that number showed up from different continents.

Psalm 27:1,4,13-14

Matthew 22:35-46 ~ If David then call him Lord

Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn - generally considered one of the greatest painters and in European art history and the most important in Dutch history. Rembrandt's greatest creative triumphs are exemplified especially in illustrations of scenes from the Bible.

One of the professors of theology at our 2008 Winter Conference for AMIA, a brilliant & gifted man, told us that using the Greek, Hebrew & Aramaic translations sometimes point to the beautiful language more clearly seen in King James Version. It is a priviledge to see different translations of the bible. Perhaps Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn paintings remind us what is old is still beautiful today. Jesus Christ is a man defying circumstance & class barriers, some of his most devout followers in the Sanhedrin Council (Joseph of Arimathea & Nicodemus John 19 face Pilot to retreive Jesus' body), Jesus sees people by their heart & soul. Jesus exists not just in the wilderness, he preachs openly in the temple from the age of 12; Jesus faces high priests & kings with the dignity they deserve.


Matthew 22:35-46 (King James Version)

Matthew 17: [Jesus] 20 He replied, "Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."

The Nicene Creed is an ecumenical Christian statement of faith. Created in 325 A. D., when Roman Emperor Constantine saw St. Andrew’s cross, the cross recognized as proclaiming a life of Christian service, and brought bishops of the Church of Jesus Christ (neither Catholic nor Protestant) from proclaiming their faith under penalty of law to recognizing the Church as religion of the mightiest Empire on the planet. Over 2,000 bishops from around the world participated in discussions to write the Nicene Creed:

I believe in one God the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the only-begotten, begotten of the Father before all ages; Light of Light, true God of true God, begotten, not made, of one essence with the Father, by whom all things were made.
Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered and was buried; and the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of the Father.
And He shall come again with glory to judge the living and the dead; of His kingdom there shall be no end.
And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of life, Who proceedeth from the Father, Who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified, Who spake by the prophets.

At the end of our Church service, we are given a blessing. Having a blessing is wonderful! Yet returning the given blessing, in silent prayer, to the Church & praying for "The Church of Jesus Christ" is even better! To have the blessings of the Lord- for the Church - to Do His work - is a necessary, powerful, life-changing, beautiful, blessed, Needed, Ongoing Work. Of His.

A world in need is best served by Jesus' Church! The Church needs to be prayed for in the power of the Holy Spirit. If you visualize this, wouldn't it be like one firework, multiplying, becoming a beautiful display of unending fireworks!!

Almost 2 decades ago, we were in a small group with a Church Junior Pastor, in his 20's, who was quite young; he spent a lot of his time telling the group about hard, unappreciated work. The work was a lot like janitorial and social services. He probably should have just told his confidants, not people in the congregation, but it is so difficult to do the Lord's work.

Remember to pray for the Church of the Lord!

Mark 3:1-6 ~ A man

Sancta Veronica Ierosolymitana ~ The Vatican Museum declares this to be the oldest picture of Jesus. A Syrian text from Kamulia in Cappadocia from the 500s tells us that the image was "drawn out of the water" and "not painted by human hand."

It shows the bearded face of a man with side-curls (jewish peyoth), whose nose has been hit. The right cheek is swollen, the beard partly ripped off. The forehead and lips have on them hints of pink, suggesting freshly healed wounds. Inexplicable peace fills the gaze out of the wide open eyes. Amazement, astonishment, surprise. Gentle compassion. No despair, no pain, no wrath. It is like the face of a man who has just awakened to a new morning. His mouth is half open. Even his teeth are visible. If one had to give a precise phrase to the vowel and word the lips are forming, it would be just a soft "Abba."

Professor Donato Vittori of the University of Bari and Professor Giulio Fanti of the University of Padua have discovered, through microscopic examinations, that there is no trace of color or paint at all on the entire cloth.

Sister Blandina Paschalis Schlömer, a German Trappist nun, pharmacist and icon painter, discovered, years before, after painstaking comparisons of the image on the Manopello cloth and the face of the man depicted on the Shroud of Turin, that the two images were identical: that they were both displaying the very same person. Every detail of both faces was exactly congruent: the same size and shape, the same wounds. The one difference: on the Shroud, the wounds are still open. On the cloth of Manoppello, the wounds have closed.

The cloth is made of an undetermined material. Bycuss, material is produced from threads a certain kind of sea mussels (“pinna nobilis”) & the most costly fabric in the ancient world. Unspun, raw byssus -in the morning light, shines more finely than angel hair. The gold of the seas! Bycuss is found off of a small island of Sant'Antioco off the coast of Sardinia. The last weaver of bycuss says that this cloth, "It has the eyes of a lamb," she says and crosses herself. "And a lion." And then: "That is Byssus!" "Yet Byssus cannot be painted on. It is simply not possible. O Dio! O Dio mio (Oh God! Oh my God!")!"

A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home. 2 So many gathered that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them. 3 Some men came, bringing to him a paralytic, carried by four of them. 4 Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus and, after digging through it, lowered the mat the paralyzed man was lying on. 5 When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Son, your sins are forgiven."


Mark 10: 13
People were bringing little children to Jesus to have him touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. 14 When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 15 I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it." 16 And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them.


Matthew 21: 42
Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the Scriptures:
" 'The stone the builders rejected
has become the capstone;
the Lord has done this,
and it is marvelous in our eyes'?


Luke 17:
12 As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance 13 and called out in a loud voice, "Jesus, Master, have pity on us!"
14 When he saw them, he said, "Go, show yourselves to the priests." And as they went, they were cleansed.

15 One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. 16 He threw himself at Jesus' feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan.

17 Jesus asked, "Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine?


John 4: 25 The woman said, "I know that Messiah" (called Christ) "is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us."

26Then Jesus declared, "I who speak to you am he."



John 4:
39 Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman's testimony, "He told me everything I ever did." 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days. 41 And because of his words many more became believers.


John 8:8
The centurion replied, "Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. 9For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and that one, 'Come,' and he comes. I say to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it."

10When Jesus heard this, he was astonished and said to those following him, "I tell you the truth, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.


John 8:14
When Jesus came into Peter's house, he saw Peter's mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. 15 He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him.

John 1:29
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

Revelation 5:5
Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.”
