Romans 16:3-9, 16, 22-27

3 Greet Prisca and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus, 4 who risked their necks for my life, to whom not only I give thanks but all the Churches of the Gentiles give thanks as well. 5 Greet also the Church in their house. 

Greet my beloved Epaenetus, who was the first convert to Christ in Asia. 6 Greet Mary, who has worked hard for you. 7 Greet Andronicus and Junia, my kinsmen and my fellow prisoners. They are well known to the Apostles, and they were in Christ before me. 8 Greet Ampliatus, my beloved in the Lord. 9 Greet Urbanus, our fellow worker in Christ, and my beloved Stachys.

Romans 16:16

16 Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the Churches of Christ greet you.

Romans 16:22-27

22 I Tertius, who wrote this letter, greet you in the Lord.

23 Gaius, who is host to me and to the whole church, greets you. 

Erastus, the city treasurer, and our brother Quartus, greet you.

25 Now to Him Who is able to strengthen you according to my Gospel and the Preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the Revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages 26 but has now been disclosed and through the prophetic writings has been made known to all nations, according to the Command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith— 

27 To the only wise God be glory 

forevermore 

through Jesus Christ! 

Amen.

How did all the people listed in these few verses know one another? It says in this papyrus all the Apostles know each other? 

According to Paul, who identifies himself as the author of Romans in Romans 1, he met Prisca and Aquila, husband and wife, as he traveled and was making the tents Paul made to sell to have his bread, this daily bread. Prisca and Aquila were also tent makers.  Instead of competition, they had fellowship.  And began to arrange their travel plans to coincide with Paul.

As Paul spoke to them, he shared what all of the Roman Empire knew about Jesus Christ.  During the life and ministry of Jesus the Lord, as Jesus spoke, Greeks from the Island of Crete wanted Jesus to come back with them to live in Crete. 

Jesus was shaking the world, without modern technology, during His years demonstrating His Grace upon Grace. 

We know Jesus had daily conflict with those who accused Him of being a drunkard and an overeater. To have come from nothing but Nazareth. Lying, to defy Scripture and say Nazareth was nothing in Scripture. These detractors accused Him of leading people astray. Being presumptuous. Not obedient to the Law. And took His healed people and their parents in to threaten them with loss of all their lives.  Jesus dealt with unsavory liars. Who set themselves on high. 

And still, Jesus drew amazingly large crowds the Scriptures called Great Crowds. Why? His Grace upon Grace. The Nature of God. Jesus having compassion on people going great lengths to worship in the quiet places, having traveled for days to see Jesus. Jesus made straight paths to God with the Way, the Truth and the Life. 

Like Paul, Jesus loved those who sought Him and He healed them All. 

And like today, the world was in a tangle. Marriage was being changed by Caesar Augustus, calling for more taxes. Crime. The weather was so bizarre. Factions fighting the government. Herod hiring the priests and deciding who would preach. The upper class not following the laws of God, sorting out morality and God.  And people like Anna of Luke 2, living in the House of God. While the Essenes said The Spirit of God was dead in the Temple. The taxation people frequently gouged fraudulently and outrageously. And were acceptable to the government and not the people. 

The Kingdom, the Power and the Glory far beyond technology or winds and whims of change. 

Jesus began by asking for acknowledgement, the Kingdom of Heaven was at hand.  And repentance. Why other than the obvious holiness and sin separating us from loving God?  To have those who wanted to hear Jesus, The Christ of God. Those who could hear with their ears. And Abide in Love.  Jesus was sorting out those who Abide in Love.

Abba, Father,

Who Redeems 

your life from the pit
