Psalm 147

1 Praise the Lord!
For it is good to sing praises to our God;
for it is pleasant, [for he is beautiful ] and a song of praise is fitting.
2 The Lord builds up Jerusalem;
he gathers the outcasts of Israel.
3 He heals the brokenhearted
and binds up their wounds.
4 He determines the number of the stars;
he gives to all of them their names.
5 Great is our Lord, and abundant in power;
his understanding is beyond measure.
6 The Lord lifts up the humble; [afflicted ]
he casts the wicked to the ground.

7 Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving;
make melody to our God on the lyre!
8 He covers the heavens with clouds;
he prepares rain for the earth;
he makes grass grow on the hills.
9 He gives to the beasts their food,
and to the young ravens that cry.
10 His delight is not in the strength of the horse,
nor his pleasure in the legs of a man,
11 but the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him,
in those who hope in his steadfast love.

12 Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem!
Praise your God, O Zion!
13 For he strengthens the bars of your gates;
he blesses your children within you.
14 He makes peace in your borders;
he fills you with the finest of the wheat.
15 He sends out his command to the earth;
his word runs swiftly.
16 He gives snow like wool;
he scatters hoarfrost like ashes.
17 He hurls down his crystals of ice like crumbs;
who can stand before his cold?
18 He sends out his word, and melts them;
he makes his wind blow and the waters flow.
19 He declares his word to Jacob,
his statutes and rules [ just decrees ] to Israel.
20 He has not dealt thus with any other nation;
they do not know his rules. [ just decrees ]

Our greatest pleasure is to think of all the reasons we have to praise God. When we take the time to make a long list of the things present, past and the things to come God blesses us with, we realize how abundantly beautiful the Lord truly is. He builds, gathers, heals, gives, lifts, covers, prepares, blesses, fills, sends and declares - He delights and takes pleasure in ... you.

The blessings of God come to us and His word runs swiftly.

Father God, may our conversations be abundant and our realizations of your blessings be unending. Praise to You, O LORD.

Acts 3:11-16

While he clung to Peter and John, all the people, utterly astounded, ran together to them in the portico called Solomon's. And when Peter saw it he addressed the people: “Men of Israel, why do you wonder at this, or why do you stare at us, as though by our own power or piety we have made him walk? The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our fathers, glorified his servant Jesus, whom you delivered over and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release him. But you denied the Holy and Righteous One, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, and you killed the Author of life, whom God raised from the dead. To this we are witnesses. And his name—by faith in his name—has made this man strong whom you see and know, and the faith that is through Jesus has given the man this perfect health in the presence of you all.


Our pastor was healed from needed surgery in both arms to repair both rotator cuffs. It is indeed a miracle in the healing name of Jesus Christ. Clark had an MRI and a surgery date, then two weeks before surgery in January of 2007, he was healed.

The gift of healing never stops. Trisha, Clark's wife was telling some people across the continent about Clark's healing and they were very interested in hearing about miracles today. Just as Jesus didn't let death stop Him, the miracles available in Jesus' name occur today. Miracles are not for us alone, but they are the ripples in the pond of God's Glory.

May the Glory of God come to you today and strengthen you! In the most holy and highest name of Jesus Christ our Lord.

[1-5] Now when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the LORD, she came to test him with hard questions. She came to Jerusalem with a very great retinue, with camels bearing spices, and very much gold, and precious stones; and when she came to Solomon, she told him all that was on her mind. And Solomon answered all her questions; there was nothing hidden from the king which he could not explain to her. And when the queen of Sheba had seen all the wisdom of Solomon, the house that he had built,
the food of his table, the seating of his officials, and the attendance of his servants, their clothing, his cupbearers, and his burnt offerings which he offered at the house of the LORD, there was no more spirit in her.

[6-10] And she said to the king, "The report was true which I heard in my own land of your affairs and of your wisdom, but I did not believe the reports until I came and my own eyes had seen it; and, behold, the half was not told me; your wisdom and prosperity surpass the report which I heard. Happy are your wives! Happy are these your servants, who continually stand before you and hear your wisdom! Blessed be the LORD your God, who has delighted in you and set you on the throne of Israel! Because the LORD loved Israel for ever, he has made you king, that you may execute justice and righteousness."

Then she gave the king a hundred and twenty talents of gold, and a very great quantity of spices, and precious stones; never again came such an abundance of spices as these which the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon.


What a great painting today! The sun is coming up and a voyage is ahead. A new day and new opportunity.

Milleniums have generated stories speculating about the Queen of Sheba and Solomon. From legends in Ethiopia of seduction and a son from their meeting, to an Ark of the Covenant in Ethiopia no one is allowed to see (guarded by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church). There is ancient history showing Hebrew spoken in Ethiopia a long time before the birth of Christ. Metaphorical images are given of the virgin birth and the bride of Christ. Wow, this is a time of biblical proportions. Different from worldly vision, the Scriptures do not declare any romance.

So, I'll throw a true historical parable in: Peter the Great of Russia traveled to France to meet the child-king Louis XV. Peter the Great felt great compassion and liking for the child, who had such responsibilities waiting for him. Peter was very tall and hoisted the child into his arms. He carried the child away from the courtiers and kindly explained to young Louis, the nobles of France were far too wealthy not to take better care of the peasants. Peter the Great tried to explain to the young child it would lead to the downfall of France, while explaining France was in the leadership position of the entire world at the time.

Jesus was interested in the Queen of Sheba & Solomon, as well. He cut thought the speculation to praise & prophesy about the Queen of Sheba 1,000 years later:

Matthew 12:24
The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon's wisdom, and now one greater than Solomon is here.

Solomon asked for wisdom & a gift was given to him. The Queen of Sheba traveled a great distance to seek out wisdom, and found the Lord. Jesus said that when renewal is front of us, we will see the Lord ahead of us!

1 Kings 8:22-30 ~ heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain You

When Biblical findings are announced, Archeologists then endlessly debate. In 1996, the New York Times, the History Channel and many others announced deeper layers of the existing Western Wall, remnant of the Second Temple called Wailing Wall, had been found. The older stones were from the First Temple built by Solomon, due to the placing and the stone size of the more modest First Temple.

The layers, other than massive Herodian stones and the more modern Islamic stones, are debated. When on the tour to see the stones, the smaller stones are labeled as the closest point to the First Temple.

1 Kings 8:22-30

22 Then Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord in the presence of all the assembly of Israel and spread out his hands toward heaven, 23 and said, “O Lord, God of Israel, there is no God like you, in heaven above or on earth beneath, keeping covenant and showing steadfast love to your servants who walk before you with all their heart, 24 who have kept with your servant David my father what you declared to him. You spoke with your mouth, and with your hand have fulfilled it this day. 25 Now therefore, O Lord, God of Israel, keep for your servant David my father what you have promised him, saying, ‘You shall not lack a man to sit before me on the throne of Israel, if only your sons pay close attention to their way, to walk before me as you have walked before me.’ 26 Now therefore, O God of Israel, let your word be confirmed, which you have spoken to your servant David my father.

27 “But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain you; how much less this house that I have built! 28 Yet have regard to the prayer of your servant and to his plea, O Lord my God, listening to the cry and to the prayer that your servant prays before you this day, 29 that your eyes may be open night and day toward this house, the place of which you have said, ‘My name shall be there,’ that you may listen to the prayer that your servant offers toward this place. 30 And listen to the plea of your servant and of your people Israel, when they pray toward this place. 1 Kings 8:1-13 ~the LORD'S glory had filled the temple of the LORD

1 Kings 8:1-3 ~ (New American Bible) Listen

1 At the order of Solomon, the elders of Israel and all the leaders of the tribes, the princes in the ancestral houses of the Israelites, came to King Solomon in Jerusalem, to bring up the ark of the LORD'S covenant from the city of David (which is Zion). 2 All the men of Israel assembled before King Solomon during the festival in the month of Ethanim (the seventh month).

3 When all the elders of Israel had arrived, the priests took up the ark; 4 they carried the ark of the LORD and the meeting tent with all the sacred vessels that were in the tent. (The priests and Levites carried them.) 5 King Solomon and the entire community of Israel present for the occasion sacrificed before the ark sheep and oxen too many to number or count.

6 The priests brought the ark of the covenant of the LORD to its place beneath the wings of the cherubim in the sanctuary, the holy of holies of the temple. 7 The cherubim had their wings spread out over the place of the ark, sheltering the ark and its poles from above. 8 The poles were so long that their ends could be seen from that part of the holy place adjoining the sanctuary; however, they could not be seen beyond. (They have remained there to this day.) 9 There was nothing in the ark but the two stone tablets which Moses had put there at Horeb, when the LORD made a covenant with the Israelites at their departure from the land of Egypt.

10 When the priests left the holy place, the cloud filled the temple of the LORD
11 so that the priests could no longer minister because of the cloud, since the LORD'S glory had filled the temple of the LORD.

12 Then Solomon said, "The LORD intends to dwell in the dark cloud; 13 I have truly built you a princely house, a dwelling where you may abide forever."

2 Samuel 22:10-12
He parted the heavens and came down;
dark clouds were under his feet.
He mounted the cherubim and flew;
he soared on the wings of the wind.
He made darkness his canopy around him—
the dark rain clouds of the sky.

What a sight to behold.



Solomon built more Cherubim into the room built to be the Holy of Holies, this passage is describing them as the Ark is placed in the Sanctuary. The descriptions of the Ark being built describe a Mercy Seat existing between the two Cherubim on the Ark. The Ark is referred to once as a throne. Our pictures of the Ark, never have it remotely look like God's Throne, but instead a decorative box holding sacred relics instead of Throne of the Living God.

Solomon proclaimed God would live in the Temple of the Lord forever. After Jesus was resurrected, John had a vision of the Heavenly Kingdom to come:

Revelation 21:22-26
And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, and its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there. They will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations.

Man keeps trying to have permanence of eternity on earth. God designs eternity for His Heavenly Kingdom. God gives us glimpses, He gives us beautiful glimpses, of what is to come.

Psalm 138 ~ give thanks for Your name, steadfast love and faithfulness

Psalm 138

1 I give you thanks, O Lord, with my whole heart;
before the gods I sing your praise;
2 I bow down toward your holy temple
and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness,
for you have exalted above all things
your name and your word.
3 On the day I called, you answered me;
my strength of soul you increased.

4 All the kings of the earth shall give you thanks, O Lord,
for they have heard the words of your mouth,
5 and they shall sing of the ways of the Lord,
for great is the glory of the Lord.
6 For though the Lord is high, he regards the lowly,
but the haughty he knows from afar.

7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble,
you preserve my life;
you stretch out your hand against the wrath of my enemies,
and your right hand delivers me.
8 The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me;
your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever.
Do not forsake the work of your hands.


We had an excellent sermon today from our Deacon. She included an ancient African parable, she emphasized is not of the bible, but is a learning parable - giving a thought to ponder:

Jesus and his disciples were walking & Jesus asked each of the disciples to carry a stone with them from the side of the path. The disciples all chose a different sized stone, John chose a very large stone and Peter a small one. Later in the day, Jesus asked the disciples to put the stones down and He changed the stones into bread. It was the end of the day, the disciples were hungry and Peter only had a very small amount of bread. John had plenty and shared with Peter and the others.

The next day, Jesus asked again for the disciples to pick up a stone. Almost all the disciples chose larger stones. They carried the stones with them to the Sea of Galilee & Jesus asked the disciples to cast the stones into the water. The disciples quickly threw the stones into the water and waited. Jesus and the disciples all watched the water. Thomas asked, with the others, "What miracle would Jesus do with the stones today?" "Yes," they all asked, "what would Jesus do?"

Jesus answered, "Today you all threw a stone into the water & you will receive a question: for what person and what reason did you carry a stone today?"

Human nature in all of us. The gods we have: self-centered love, competition, abundance, greed, boredom, false subservience and power.

Remember the chapter after Jesus fed the thousands?

Matthew 16:5-12
⁵When they went across the lake, the disciples forgot to take bread. ⁶"Be careful," Jesus said to them. "Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."

⁷They discussed this among themselves and said, "It is because we didn't bring any bread."

⁸Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, "You of little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread? ⁹Do you still not understand? Don't you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered? ¹⁰Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered? ¹¹How is it you don't understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees." ¹²Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Praise be to you Father, for giving us the highest name of Jesus Christ as Lord. We give you thanks for your steadfast love and faithfulness.

“Sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously;
the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea.”

22 Then Moses made Israel set out from the Red Sea, and they went into the wilderness of Shur. They went three days in the wilderness and found no water. 23 When they came to Marah, they could not drink the water of Marah because it was bitter; therefore it was named Marah. 24 And the people grumbled against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?” 25 And he cried to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a log, and he threw it into the water, and the water became sweet.

There the Lord made for them a statute and a rule, and there he tested them, 26 saying, “If you will diligently listen to the voice of the Lord your God, and do that which is right in his eyes, and give ear to his commandments and keep all his statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you that I put on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, your healer.”

27 Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees, and they encamped there by the water.

In the first 3 days of the Exodus, the Lord promised them a healthy life & so they used the blessing and wandered for 40 years. Moses, being a prince of Egypt, and leaving loaded with Egyptian treasure given to them, wrote these events down, but an oral history remains. There are few people who cannot hum this:
“I will sing unto the Lord, for He has triumphed gloriously;
the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea."

A lot of times we remember from children's movies & Charlton Heston, but these movies should be encouraged! Imagine how many nights, in the vast desert, under perfect desert skies of the Exodus, people sang this memorable song praising God. They had a pillar of fire to sing it by, imagine seeing such a sight. We can all, only too well, imagine being the doubters God kept in the desert.

Were the people bitter during the 40 years? God really didn't record their time. No one really wants to hear 40 years of complaints. Or even an evening. God showed Moses a log to throw into the water, to make it sweet. Jesus also told us about bitterness:

Matthew 7:5
You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.

How many times we would please those around us & God, if only we would remember we have received so much mercy ourselves. How many times is it really that important?

The Lord will reign forever and ever!

Rebuilding of the Second Temple went on for centuries, this is a model (Link Scripture for Today). Although the Second Temple was given the listed Temple Treasures back, the Babylonian king could not return the Ark of the Covenant, because it has already been hidden and never was in the Second Temple. It's interesting the First Temple, built by Solomon, simply stood while the Ark was there, but the Second Temple was always being destroyed by war, or remodeled.
Jerusalem falls in 70 A.D. to Titus, this would have been about the end of Jesus' natural life on earth.

About the 3rd to 4th century AD, the Jews collected enough money to rebuild the Temple, but the building was destroyed by earthquake while still in construction. Then war.

Exodus 37

1 Bezalel made the ark of acacia wood. Two cubits and a half was its length, a cubit and a half its breadth, and a cubit and a half its height. 2 And he overlaid it with pure gold inside and outside, and made a molding of gold around it. 3 And he cast for it four rings of gold for its four feet, two rings on its one side and two rings on its other side. 4 And he made poles of acacia wood and overlaid them with gold 5 and put the poles into the rings on the sides of the ark to carry the ark. 6 And he made a mercy seat of pure gold. Two cubits and a half was its length, and a cubit and a half its breadth. 7 And he made two cherubim of gold. He made them of hammered work on the two ends of the mercy seat, 8 one cherub on the one end, and one cherub on the other end. Of one piece with the mercy seat he made the cherubim on its two ends. 9 The cherubim spread out their wings above, overshadowing the mercy seat with their wings, with their faces one to another; toward the mercy seat were the faces of the cherubim.

Making the Table

10 He also made the table of acacia wood. Two cubits was its length, a cubit its breadth, and a cubit and a half its height. 11 And he overlaid it with pure gold, and made a molding of gold around it. 12 And he made a rim around it a handbreadth wide, and made a molding of gold around the rim. 13 He cast for it four rings of gold and fastened the rings to the four corners at its four legs. 14 Close to the frame were the rings, as holders for the poles to carry the table. 15 He made the poles of acacia wood to carry the table, and overlaid them with gold. 16 And he made the vessels of pure gold that were to be on the table, its plates and dishes for incense, and its bowls and flagons with which to pour drink offerings.

Making the Lampstand

17 He also made the lampstand of pure gold. He made the lampstand of hammered work. Its base, its stem, its cups, its calyxes, and its flowers were of one piece with it. 18 And there were six branches going out of its sides, three branches of the lampstand out of one side of it and three branches of the lampstand out of the other side of it; 19 three cups made like almond blossoms, each with calyx and flower, on one branch, and three cups made like almond blossoms, each with calyx and flower, on the other branch—so for the six branches going out of the lampstand. 20 And on the lampstand itself were four cups made like almond blossoms, with their calyxes and flowers, 21 and a calyx of one piece with it under each pair of the six branches going out of it. 22 Their calyxes and their branches were of one piece with it. The whole of it was a single piece of hammered work of pure gold. 23 And he made its seven lamps and its tongs and its trays of pure gold. 24 He made it and all its utensils out of a talent of pure gold.

Making the Altar of Incense

25 He made the altar of incense of acacia wood. Its length was a cubit, and its breadth was a cubit. It was square, and two cubits was its height. Its horns were of one piece with it. 26 He overlaid it with pure gold, its top and around its sides and its horns. And he made a molding of gold around it, 27 and made two rings of gold on it under its molding, on two opposite sides of it, as holders for the poles with which to carry it. 28 And he made the poles of acacia wood and overlaid them with gold.

Look at all these things, men moving and transforming parts of God's creation. All of these times, all of these events used by the Lord to unfurl His plan in His time.

Psalm 69 ~ You know

Psalm 69

1 Save me, O God!
For the waters have come up to my neck.
2 I sink in deep mire,
where there is no foothold;
I have come into deep waters,
and the flood sweeps over me.
3 I am weary with my crying out;
my throat is parched.
My eyes grow dim
with waiting for my God.

4 More in number than the hairs of my head
are those who hate me without cause;
mighty are those who would destroy me,
those who attack me with lies.
What I did not steal
must I now restore?
5 O God, you know my folly;
the wrongs I have done are not hidden from you.

6 Let not those who hope in you be put to shame through me,
O Lord God of hosts;
let not those who seek you be brought to dishonor through me,
O God of Israel.
7 For it is for your sake that I have borne reproach,
that dishonor has covered my face.
8 I have become a stranger to my brothers,
an alien to my mother's sons.

9 For zeal for your house has consumed me,

30 I will praise the name of God with a song;
I will magnify him with thanksgiving.
31 This will please the Lord more than an ox
or a bull with horns and hoofs.
32 When the humble see it they will be glad;
you who seek God, let your hearts revive.
33 For the Lord hears the needy
and does not despise his own people who are prisoners.

34 Let heaven and earth praise him,
the seas and everything that moves in them.
35 For God will save Zion
and build up the cities of Judah,
and people shall dwell there and possess it;
36 the offspring of his servants shall inherit it,
and those who love his name shall dwell in it.


What a sad, mournful Psalm this is. It is the the cry of Good Friday. Jesus was not only hunted, deserted, mocked flogged, condemned, beaten, but he physically began to deteriorate during the 650-yard journey from the Fortress Antonia to Golgotha . His muscles had been pushed past human endurance.

Where would water have come from in this Psalm? Many doctors have looked at the gospel of John to understand what would have physically caused Jesus' death. They all agree Jesus suffered so much from the Garden of Gethsemane, all of these things hastened His death.

Dr. David Teraska has researched the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ

"The average time of suffering before death by crucifixion is stated to be about 2-4 days (Tenney), although there are reported cases where the victims lived for 9 days. (Lipsius) The actual causes of death by crucifixion were multifactorial, one of the most significant would have been the severity of the scourging. (Edwards) Jesus died a quick physical death (Pilate was surprised that He had died so soon. (Mark 15:44)). While many of the physical signs preceding death were present, one possibility is that Jesus did not die by physical factors which ended His ability to live, but that He gave up His life of His own accord. His last statement, "Into your hands I commit my Spirit" seems to show that Jesus' death occurred by giving Himself up. In John 10, He states that only He has the power to lay down His life. He proved His power over death by His resurrection. Truly, God is the one who has power over life and death."

John 19:33-37 But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus' side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water. The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe. These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: "Not one of his bones will be broken," and, as another scripture says, "They will look on the one they have pierced."

Where did the water come from that was mixed with Jesus blood and possibly the water mentioned in Psalm 69?

Dr. Terasaka continues, "One theory states that Jesus died of a massive myocardial infarction, in which the heart ruptured (Bergsma) which may have resulted from His falling while carrying the cross. (Dr. D. A. Ball) Another theory states that Jesus' heart was surrounded by fluid in the pericardium, which constricted the heart and caused death.(Dr. C.T. Davis) The physical stresses of crucifixion may have produced a fatal cardiac arrhythmia. (Dr. C..Johnson)The stated order of "blood and water" may not necessarily indicate the order of appearance, but rather the relative prominence of each fluid. In this case, a spear through the right side of the heart would allow the pleural fluid (fluid built up in the lungs) to escape first, followed by a flow of blood from the wall of the right ventricle.(Dr. W.D. Edwards) The medical evidence supports that Jesus did die a physical death."

"Christianity is the story of God sacrificing His Son to restore a relationship that was broken. As stated in the above text, Jesus gave up His life to pay for the sins of mankind and taking the punishment for the sin upon Himself. Because He gave His life on the cross, any one who believes in Him will have a restoration of a personal relationship with God. Jesus Himself claimed to be the only way to God (John 14:6) and only by the knowledge of God through Jesus Christ can man have a meaningful and purposeful life. (John 10:10)"

"God desires that all men come to know Him in a personal way. If you have never received Jesus' gift of Himself for your sins , or have any doubts to how you can have a meaningful and purposeful life by the knowledge of God through Jesus Christ, you can start by praying a simple prayer, such as:"

Dear Lord Jesus. Thank you for dying on the cross for me. I confess that I am a sinner before God. I acknowledge that by your death and sacrifice that you have paid the penalty of my sins for me. Please come into my heart and become the Lord of my life. As you gave your life, I give my life to you. I will take up my cross and follow you, not as I will, but to follow Your perfect will for my life. In Jesus Name, Amen.

Christians Know! Easter follows Good Friday. We do not have a God who sits on high without concern for us. God chose to dwell with us. God did not leave Jesus, He does not leave us, this is the ending of Psalm 69:

30 I will praise the name of God with a song;
I will magnify him with thanksgiving.

32 When the humble see it they will be glad;
you who seek God, let your hearts revive. (!)

33 For the Lord hears the needy

1 I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a servant (1 Or deaconess ) of the church at Cenchreae, 2 that you may welcome her in the Lord in a way worthy of the saints, and help her in whatever she may need from you, for she has been a patron of many and of myself as well.

3 Greet Prisca and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus, 4 who risked their necks for my life, to whom not only I give thanks but all the churches of the Gentiles give thanks as well. 5 Greet also the church in their house. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

Who Were Rufus and his mother?

Not Paul's biological family. Rufus is not a common name in New Testament times, (later this became a popular name and is one of my family names) but appears in Mark 15:21.

²¹A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross.

It is not certain it is the same Rufus, some Biblical scholars lean in that direction. Cyrene was on the north coast of Africa, north of Benghazi, Libya. I, personally, find it thrilling & a tear-jerker that Simon, the bystander, carrying Jesus' cross that day, would have children mentioned casually later. Who wouldn't have been changed by standing with Jesus in his time of great sacrifice.

Cyrene did not have a large number of Jews, but to read Romans 16 - in the first century A.D. - this letter would have been shocking to the Jews. And a shock to more conservative Christian churches today. Most of the names are Greek or Latin, 11 of the names are women. And some women have a position of some authority. Not as priests, but deaconess, or a servant. Paul sees them, not just as fellow workers, but his family & recognizes them 9 times with the words: beloved, kinsman, mother or messenger. Messenger isn't an unusual term here, he is talking about angels. Paul sees his family as people willing to risk their necks for his life.

This funny portion, at the end of Romans, called chapter 16, is actually quite important. People sitting at home, reading their bible, should realize we all see the great apostle Paul, who never built a cathedral, was not the nomadic waif only relying upon God. Paul was known to proclaim, when we have the Holy Spirit dwelling in us, we are the Temple of God. He was not saying become an island, he was a joyful member of Christian community. Something Father God sees as families living on earth and in heaven. Ephesians 3:15.

To the Christian church today, Paul is saying people are not separated by class, position, hierarchy of belief, but all are beloved family. The youth of today would say, "Peace Out", & pound their chest with a fist twice. And Paul would add, "Peace Out, My Beloved", with an enormous hug.
