John 14
“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.
2 In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. 4 And you know the way to where I am going.”
5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?”
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”
8 Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.”
9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.
12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. 13 Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.
15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. 21 Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” 22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” 23 Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me.
25 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. 28 You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29 And now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe. 30 I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no claim on me, 31 but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.
This is John 14, 15, 16 and 17.
The New Covenant.
Jesus has a knack for getting to the point and being merciful. He does not generally make conversation for pages. Jesus is more action than Word. Which is interesting, free standing thought, as Jesus is the Word of God made manifest.
Picture with me, how did John remember the talk of the New Covenant when Jesus is going to step outside and be taken down terribly.
John is going to witness with his own eyes Jesus ascending. He will exactly know the Risen Christ being clear on His destination. John is going be with Mary, his newly given Mother, and Jesus' Brothers and the Disciples Acts 1:14, to help recall exactly what Jesus has said. They are piecing together everything Jesus has said. You can understand completely their desire to comprehend the magnitude of what has happened.
This Gospel of John's is sorted out as they take over the actual Temple and this is not an isolated incident, Acts 2 says they are in the Temple daily and eating together. Daily figuring this out as eye witnesses. Learning to be a tight community as thousands believe.
What has John put together for us to understand in John 14?
1. Jesus Knows Anxiety - Jesus counsels us to be less afraid. And Jesus is counseling huge times in life are not for display, but for the people who matter most. A good thing to remember when Life has surprising moments. Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others.
2. The Destination is all of us being on a Prodigal Son Journey to Home. Jesus gives His Word Home is being prepared for us.
3.Thomas demonstrates an important aspect of our relationship to Father God.
God is open to questions and dialogue. Making us cognizant to remember, answers are given to prayer. Sometimes the answer is: no, wait, grow, steadfastly hope with prayer, fast and yes. An important point to see Thomas interrupts Jesus in mid-stride of "The New Covenant." Pretty impressive God is about saving the world and letting just a typical Thomas interrupt. Exactly like Thomas is that Prodigal Son and God is running to him.
4. Do you think Thomas ever said, "Can you imagine I interrupted the New Covenant?"
5. Philip jumps in on the act and says to the Light of the World, for 3 years of walking in awe and amazement, "Show us the Father!" [[Philip is probably whining he did not get to go to the Transfiguration. Peter seemed to be rather chatty about his promise to Jesus about this, later. 'Give us the show, Jesus! They have more faith!']]
This continues to show us - today - Father God and His Love. Thomas has interrupted and now Philip. Disciples are like herding cats. Jesus never says, "I AM Speaking." God is a VERY Kindly Parent.
6. Jesus says, "Believe me. Truly, Truly do what I say because these wonderful miracles are yours if you heed and believe." This is very overlooked, I had a marvelous discussion about two people being saved from cancer from believing prayers from cancers the doctors said were not a possible cure from. And the discussion went on to say, these answers that are real, solid and pure miracle also enclose a Good Father who sometimes says, no.
7. If we loose someone we love to passing on. We know loss. We find out how heavy grief can be,
Jesus, being God, cuts to the main point so we have something we can hold on to. Solid Word of God. He will not leave us orphans.
8. In the middle of the New Covenant, which would be almost impossible for us to enjoy and be patient with His Disciples, Jesus is enjoying His final time with them. Jesus is trusting God to be God.
Jesus knows these men. They want to know more. They are always questioning. Jesus tells them they will have the Holy Spirit. Jesus has patience and joy in this all important Prophecy. Jesus tells them about the Holy Spirit, He tells them Rise, let us go from here. This is not just His Ascension, this is the second coming of Christ proceeding. In a very few words, Jesus is concisely explaining some very key doctrine. Knowing Jesus - with Joy.
John 15, Jesus is continuing the New Covenant important and relevant directions to continue Life.
Again, look at this with me, He uses this time to tell them reassuringly not to be afraid, tells them the Holy Spirit IS going to be a solid arrival and tells them about Ascension. John 15 is still the New Covenant Discussion. Jesus is also telling them to look with eyes of faith for a Higher Purpose in life above what will be the largest, most fearful time of all of their lives.
Father God,
You witness the iniquity of mankind and the generations of sins.
All the days of our fathers are known to You.
This was a time of great favor towards Your Creation. God brightened the eyes of His People to see Grace upon Grace.
Your Steadfast Love. To set up Eternally the House of Jesus, repair ruins, and give us His Protection always.
Help us with the Power of Your Holy Spirit to maintain Your commandments. Empower us to worship with all our hearts, souls and as in Spirit and in Truth for, You, Father God. Take great care of the ones we love, our sons and daughters and the people yet unborn. To favor those we pray for and our concerns, we lift up to You.
To Rejoice in God's Word. He tells us about Himself! To Know the Joy of Jesus. The Willingness of Jesus and to expect to have Life seeking, finding, living gratitude in Your Goodness.
We ask, partnering with Jesus our Savior, for Your gracious favor to us all. Seek their strength, peace and prosperity. To eat the good fruit of our labors. To share. Covering us in the Name of Jesus, to be the people who in faith have sins forgiven. We want to have noble plans, be noble people and Stand in Your Favor.
In the Highest Name. Jesus Christ. Amen.
