The People in the Boat were Smiling
Genesis 24:45-67
Evening Liturgy, Sunday, February 5, 2023
“Before I had finished speaking in my heart, behold, Rebekah came out with her water jar on her shoulder, and she went down to the spring and drew water. I said to her, ‘Please let me drink.’ 46 She quickly let down her jar from her shoulder and said, ‘Drink, and I will give your camels drink also.’ So I drank, and she gave the camels drink also.
47 Then I asked her, ‘Whose daughter are you?’ She said, ‘The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor's son, whom Milcah bore to him.’ So I put the ring on her nose and the bracelets on her arms.
48 Then I bowed my head and worshiped the Lord and blessed the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who had led me by the right way to take the daughter of my master's kinsman for his son.
49 Now then, if you are going to show steadfast love and faithfulness to my master, tell me; and if not, tell me, that I may turn to the right hand or to the left.”
50 Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said, “The thing has come from the Lord; we cannot speak to you bad or good. 51 Behold, Rebekah is before you; take her and go, and let her be the wife of your master's son, as the Lord has spoken.”
52 When Abraham's servant heard their words, he bowed himself to the earth before the Lord. 53 And the servant brought out jewelry of silver and of gold, and garments, and gave them to Rebekah. He also gave to her brother and to her mother costly ornaments. 54 And he and the men who were with him ate and drank, and they spent the night there. When they arose in the morning, he said, “Send me away to my master.” 55 Her brother and her mother said, “Let the young woman remain with us a while, at least ten days; after that she may go.”
56 But he said to them, “Do not delay me, since the Lord has prospered my way. Send me away that I may go to my master.”
57 They said, “Let us call the young woman and ask her.” 58 And they called Rebekah and said to her, “Will you go with this man?” She said, “I will go.” 59 So they sent away Rebekah their sister and her nurse, and Abraham's servant and his men. 60 And they blessed Rebekah and said to her,
“Our sister, may you become
thousands of ten thousands,
and may your offspring possess
the gate of those who hate him!”
61 Then Rebekah and her young women arose and rode on the camels and followed the man. Thus the servant took Rebekah and went his way.
62 Now Isaac had returned from Beer-lahai-roi and was dwelling in the Negeb. 63 And Isaac went out to meditate in the field toward evening. And he lifted up his eyes and saw, and behold, there were camels coming. 64 And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she dismounted from the camel 65 and said to the servant, “Who is that man, walking in the field to meet us?”
The servant said, “It is my master.”
So she took her veil and covered herself. 66 And the servant told Isaac all the things that he had done. 67 Then Isaac brought her into the tent of Sarah his mother and took Rebekah, and she became his wife, and he loved her. So Isaac was comforted after his mother's death.
The Way, the Truth and the Life
Today, Edward and I had a rental car and the new technology was very exciting. Automatic Cruise Control. Cruise Control works with the various speeds of the traffic around you. Slowing down if the car in front of you is poking along. A new aspect to driving. We went over Houston Harbor huge causeways and saw all manner of interesting things.
And we went over to Galveston's Pier 21 to have some lunch and were remembering how many people we have gone with to see Pier 21.
Edward and I were very jazzed to be out and about and seeing some new things. We'd gone to Dallas to see Edward's mother, and found my mother's property to be un mowed and the AC turned off since the roofers were there. A Month of neglect when we thought we were in the hands of a competent realtor. Which led to a dismissal. And new interviews. My mother was a Realtor with this firm and I called several veteran Realtors, who informed me to report this whole list to the Manager. It was a bummer Memorial Day Weekend with trips to Home Depot to repair other aspects of neglect. Edward's mother wasn't having a good weekend either. Although her nurse is a cheerful, full of life, good aspect in her life!
And as we sat down to lunch, we were filled with gratitude to be in the sunshine and seeing vast doings on the commercial harbor of Galveston. We normally have normal face on, but I noticed we were so relieved, we were both smiling.
And I noticed none of the people sitting watching this beautiful bay were smiling. And in fact, looked glum. Why? Families don't usually gather for Memorial Day Weekend. Unless you were in LA, leaving, it wasn't a big travel weekend. Families and parents didn't see their young people. Glum.
Easter is a heavily traveled weekend!
What adds life to our Lives?
Rebekah does!
How? The Eagerness to do Life.
It doesn't have to be perfect! This week, I've seen and heard of several admonitions just to be quiet and get along. Isn't that sort of how we got into the chill and then the pandemic?
When was the last time you saw someone carrying in a homemade Birthday cake on your street? Aren't we all so much thinner than before the Pandemic! Oh, Really!
We loved to visit my mother's first cousin, Maxine. In old age, the house was a mess, mess, but she was always entertaining and we always had an old, cold, glass, old-fashioned Coca Cola Maxine would serve the family coming by. Us! Not so perfect, but Willing!
Now we have officially left the Pandemic scary. No one is going on long bike rides or walking with family. Not as many exercising people.
Rebekah was like Isaiah. She didn't ask how many acres, goats, landscape, houses, servants or the distance. Rebekah was Just WILLING.
We all love to know a baby is arriving. Thrilling! And yet, what children are is WILLING.
I hope for my family and pray hard every day, we find more WILLING HEART within us.
The Way, The Truth and the Life. Jesus was reported to be a Drunkard and a Glutton. Sometimes you have to just smile at that. The man who knew Zacchaeus knew how to have a good time! The friend of Matthew! To have a Party! The Friend of Lazarus, the altar in Spain tells us in our lifetime!
The Way, The Truth and The Life is a gamble. To be yourselves, to say your opinion, to be kind. To be firm. Being gracious. To try again. To attain the growth of the Culture as in the Body of Christ. To live not slap dash, but to want to see us all upbuild again.
Is there really a glimmer of Hope?
Yes, people are awake and the State Congresses
and National are trying to piece us back
on the road to recovery again.
We just need more sunrises to
establish the Hope again.
Reawaken the Faith in us, again.
The Lord loves our prayers.
Abba, Father,
Amazing grace how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now I'm found
Was blind but now I see
'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear
And grace my fears relieved
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed
Through many dangers, toils, and snares
I have already come
This grace that brought me safe thus far
And grace will lead me home
When we've been here ten thousand years
Bright, shining as the sun
We've no less days to sing God's praise
Than when we first begun
Amazing grace how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now I'm found
Was blind but now I see
Our prayer, Father,says, Please Jesus.
Amen!
