8 The LORD is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
9 The LORD is good to all, and his compassion is over all that he has made.

16 Thou openest thy hand, thou satisfiest the desire of every living thing.

A circle of grass, smooth as a lawn, met her eyes, with dark trees dancing all round it. And then -- oh joy! For He was there: the huge Lion, shining white in the moonlight, with his huge black shadow underneath him.

But for the movement of his tail he might have been a stone lion, but Lucy never thought of that. She never stopped to think whether he was a friendly lion or not. She rushed to him. She felt her heart would burst if she lost a moment. And the next thing she knew was that she was kissing him and putting her arms as far round his neck as she could and burying her face into the beautiful rich silkiness of his mane.

"Aslan, Aslan. Dear Aslan," sobbed Lucy. "At last!"

The great beast rolled over on his side so that Lucy fell, half sitting and half lying between his front paws. He bent forward and just touched her nose with his tongue. His warm breath came all round her. She gazed up into the large wise face.

"Welcome, child," he said.

Said Aslan, " If you go back to the others now, and wake them up: and tell them you have seen me again ;and that you must all get up at once and follow me -- what will happen? There is only one way of finding out."

"Do you mean that is what you want me to do? gasped Lucy.

"Yes, little one," said Aslan.

"Will the other ones see you too?" asked Lucy.

"Certainly not as first, " said Aslan. "later on, it depends."

"But they won't believe me!" said Lucy.

"It doesn't matter, " said Aslan.

Lucy buried her head in his mane to hide from his face, but there must have been magic in his mane. She could feel lion-strength going into her. Quite suddenly she sat up.


Thou openest thy hand, thou satisfiest the desire of every living thing.

Father God, Almighty King, You are all the vastness of the Universe, but Your love reaches out to us. Blessed be Your name, Jesus. Amen.

Psalm 40 ~ blessed is the man who makes the Lord his trust, who does not turn to the proud

1 I waited patiently for the Lord;
he inclined to me and heard my cry.
2 He drew me up from the pit of destruction,
out of the miry bog,
and set my feet upon a rock,

3 He put a new song in my mouth,
a song of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear,
and put their trust in the Lord.

We have several really large pine trees. At the top of one, about 60 feet up, one of the branches had fallen and caught on a lower branch. I pointed out to my husband, the branch looked exactly like a shepherd's crook. It was a large branch. We wondered if it would do damage when it fell, so on one of our walks, we prayed about it. I rather liked that shepherd branch hanging up there!

Years later, we were returning from one of our walks to Starbucks and my husband noticed the branch had neatly fallen into the flower bed, no damage at all. Eagerly we went to see this shepherd's crook. We were discouraged to find one crushed baby sparrow. My husband and I found 3 or 4 more tiny little sparrows. They were cute with little masks, like the one in the photo. We knew not to touch them, or the parent would smell the human scent. I could hear, from inside our house, the parents crying frantically & the babies peeping cries. They couldn't locate the young birds. I was getting frantic myself. And growing more unhappy that neatly shaped branch was the message of impending doom. Time was going on and it seemed the little birds, after falling so many feet in the hollow in the branch, were getting quiet.

Now feeling good & angry, I googled 'rescuing baby birds fallen from the nest'. Amazingly, the human touch and birds scent is a complete myth; it advised getting a basket, putting the remainder of the nest in the basket and using coat hangers to hang the basket in branches at a comfortable, reachable height. Slightly tilt the basket so the birds fold into the original nest. The hollowed branch had nesting materials. Thrilled - yes - to hush the more distressed parents and rescue the oh-so quiet baby birds. I returned to the house, job done. NO. The babies were too distressed to cry & the parents were frantic. One more google search. The answer, me grabbing the baby and holding it high; now the baby bird was squeeling. Oh, that worked. The dad was hysterically fearful of this human. He fearfully and bravely flew to a lower branch, just nearby. Now, the parents could see me put the baby back into the basket/nest. Alleluia, the parents were only too glad to see their brood. My reward - getting to see the parents raise them for the next two weeks. Happy family. Everyone grew up after some flying lessons. We still see their variety of sparrow arrive at our bird bath and feeder. The glow of kindness brightens the day.

This is like the blessings we have in the Lord. We have discomfort, fear and our issues are not immediately resolved. It is in trust, not abandonment, or panic & we are able to see the path God has for us.

Great is the Lord!

We are blessed when we put our trust in Him. Help us, Father God, to not abandon or panic about our troubles. To put our problems in Your hands. With faith, and a slice of curiosity, to see how You will bring Your will forth. Great is the Lord! Thank you in Jesus' name. Amen.

8 For I tell you that Christ became a servant to the circumcised to show God's truthfulness, in order to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs, 9 and in order that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written,

Recently we talked about Martha working away while Mary sat and eagerly listened to the Lord. Martha wasn't happy. We live in a world urging us to win and please ourselves. Even at the feet of Jesus Christ, those who love the Lord have problems with being a servant.

Remember, Jesus let Martha know her heart wasn't absorbing the goodness of God. She was distracted, not just by the work, but with the conflicting emotions of self. Jesus was really pretty gentle with Martha. He asked her to see the larger picture - the Spirit of God. He didn't tell Martha to sit down, to rest; He didn't ask Mary to get up and help. Jesus could have solved a work dilemma with a few suggestions. He asked her to see the better part. Martha did something correctly, too. Martha went to the Lord, with her trouble.

God asks us to seek the one voice, the perfect harmony. Put a group of people together, it's difficult for them to live in harmony. Human nature would say war would become inevitable. Jesus isn't asking for Martha to return to the kitchen with gritted teeth. Jesus isn't asking us to pull the cart by ourselves. Jesus asks for us to look for God's Holy Spirit and live in truthful harmony. How? Prayer. Asking God for help, just as Martha did. With God's help, all things are possible.

Father God, the goodness of Your Kingdom isn't accomplished by one person. Help the body of Christ to glorify You in one voice. With the power of God to encourage us to love and do more than we would imagine. For Your glory, in the power of Jesus Christ.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

Psalm 29 ~ The Lord Will Bless

Lightning is not really understood. Even less understood is the lightning a volcano generates. There is One who understands it well.


Psalm 29

1 Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings,[sons of God, or sons of might]
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
2 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness.[in holy attire]

3 The voice of the Lord is over the waters;
the God of glory thunders,
the Lord, over many waters.
4 The voice of the Lord is powerful;
the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.

5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon.
6 He makes Lebanon to skip like a calf,
and Sirion like a young wild ox.

7 The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire.
8 The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness;
the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.

9 The voice of the Lord makes the deer give birth
and strips the forests bare, [makes the oaks to shake]
and in his temple all cry, “Glory!”

10 The Lord sits enthroned over the flood;
the Lord sits enthroned as king forever.
11 May the Lord give strength to his people!

Job 37:2-4

This Psalm has all the poetry & beauty Jesus gave us in the parables with His picture language. Haven't we all lived through at least one storm where the thrashing of the storm echoes our mood? Yet even more powerful is the message of God's voice.

Isaiah 55:11
so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;
it shall not return to me empty,
but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.

What is God's Voice and how shall we recognize it?

~ The Voice of God is in His Word -expounding in detail our preparation for the Kingdom of God.

~ The Voice of God is in His creation - it speaks of His existence.

~ The Voice of God is in His prophets and apostles.

~ The Voice of God is in His ministry—only in agreement with the Voice of His Word.

God's Word goes forward in Psalm 29. It is a picture we can hold easily in our thoughts. God sends the storm, God is with us in the storm, and God's blessing is in the peace ... that will come.

Father God, Your Word blesses me today with the picture images. Your Word blesses me today in its strength. Your Word blesses me today in Your holiness. Your Word blesses me today in the beauty of Your promise. Thank You, Father God, for Your Word and Your Word made flesh who lives in beauty and truth and chose to dwell among us - Jesus Christ. Amen.

38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying, “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.” 39 But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here. 42 The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here.

Matthew 12:34
For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.
What answers did the scribes and Pharisees have... more questions. Give us more proof. What would they have wanted? The Temple to fall down & stand up? They wouldn't have liked that. The blind could see, the deaf could hear...

With all the Temple authorities looking for God, you'd think there would be more abundance of the fruit of faith. But there was some godly advice:

Acts 5:33-40 33
When they heard this, they were furious and wanted to put them to death. 34 But a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law, who was honored by all the people, stood up in the Sanhedrin and ordered that the men be put outside for a little while. 35 Then he addressed them: "Men of Israel, consider carefully what you intend to do to these men. 36 Some time ago Theudas appeared, claiming to be somebody, and about four hundred men rallied to him. He was killed, all his followers were dispersed, and it all came to nothing. 37 After him, Judas the Galilean appeared in the days of the census and led a band of people in revolt. He too was killed, and all his followers were scattered. 38 Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. 39 But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God."

40 His speech persuaded them. They called the apostles in and had them flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.

It seems not just Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea (Isaiah 53:9) were paying attention. Gamaliel was spoken of by Paul, Saul of Taurus, he wanted listeners to know Gamaliel was his teacher. Gamaliel's advice was not closely followed. Yet it was from God.

Father God, no one is good enough to place themselves in Your Kingdom. Only by the grace of God Most High, will we allowed to enter. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen.

Luke 10:38-42 ~ (New Revised Standard Version)

Now as they went on their way, he entered a certain village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to what he was saying. But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me." But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her."

The Message ~
As they continued their travel, Jesus entered a village. A woman by the name of Martha welcomed him and made him feel quite at home. She had a sister, Mary, who sat before the Master, hanging on every word he said. But Martha was pulled away by all she had to do in the kitchen. Later, she stepped in, interrupting them. "Master, don't you care that my sister has abandoned the kitchen to me? Tell her to lend me a hand."

^41-42The Master said, "Martha, dear Martha, you're fussing far too much and getting yourself worked up over nothing. One thing only is essential, and Mary has chosen it—it's the main course, and won't be taken from her."

People have been known to complain to Jesus. I know I called my own mother yesterday to complain. Same thing, I wasn't appreciated. I'm thinking it's possible, Martha's brother Lazarus, might have found his way into the kitchen to say "Is it ready Yet? What are you making? Not that, no one thinks that's good! OMG, this is Jesus, can't you come up with the Good fatted calf?"

Or maybe someone helpful came to tell Martha that Mary's hair was beautiful today and she seemed to glow. Did Mary have a new robe / chiton . Yes, I'm sure that is where the glow of inner peace and love comes from.

Or maybe the snake slithered in to say, "Good thing we have such good.... help."

My mother had good Jesus advice. What is good Jesus advice? It is surprising. It doesn't make you weep with more self-pity. Jesus advice makes you aware that there is more than just that beautiful golden circle of... self-interest. Jesus advice, goes like this: ".... Who do you work for? (God) Who was pleased? (God) Do you feel pleased with your efforts? Pull up your adult underclothes and go on. (i.e. big girl panties or gird your loins - choose the phrase meaningful to you, "loin-cloth" in Hebrew is ezor.)" It is important to note Jesus advice, is given kindly. With a caress and an outstretched hand.

Think about it. The woman at the well wanted the trouble to be hidden, she was ostracized, was living in sin and then she wanted Jesus to accept her. Jesus advice surprised her.

Jesus advice is to please the Lord and be loved by Him. To bask in that love and be grateful. There's always His outstretched hand!

Thank You, Father. Your advice is to love and get past ourselves. Help us to appreciate others as much as our own feelings. In the name of Jesus. Amen.

Matthew 12:14-21 ~ Jesus healed them all

Matthew 12:14-21

14 But the Pharisees went out and conspired against him, how to destroy him.

15 Jesus, aware of this, withdrew from there. And many followed him, and he healed them all 16 and ordered them not to make him known. 17 This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah [42:1-3]:

18 “Behold, my servant whom I have chosen,
my beloved with whom my soul is well pleased.
I will put my Spirit upon him,
and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles.
19 He will not quarrel or cry aloud,
nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets;
20 a bruised reed he will not break,
and a smoldering wick he will not quench,
until he brings justice to victory;
21 and in his name the Gentiles will hope.”

I'd been a Christian for more than two decades when it was pointed out to me how many times the Scriptures said "He healed them all." I remembered a lot of healings, the ones written about in more than a few sentences. Yet that small phrase "healed them all". Sometimes Scripture says they sought to touch Him & not just Jesus reaching out. Sometimes He physically touched them, and it also says merely, "He healed them all."

Sure, a lot of people were ill. When you think about the age: slavery, war, destruction, highway robbery, people born blind & the parable of the Good Samaritan - this was a difficult time. Not just the people who were deaf, blind, ill, but the sorrow of the people who had seen difficult things happen to loved ones. Children who died, loved ones who died in child birth, people who were well and suddenly died of fever. There are a lot of stipulations in the Bible for the fatherless and the widow.

What does it mean, "He healed them all?" The Word of God, proclaimed in love. The hopeless, the fearful, the lonely & the cut to the quick. The ones who had heard the Word of God in their youth - life had stamped on their seed of hope. The fruit of circumstance and the weed of bitterness, the joy found in life, had robbed them of their greatest need - the need of God.

These people who found Jesus had put aside the every day of life, they sought Him. Jesus didn't stay to quarrel, debate the Pharisees, shock, anger, and create a stir - Jesus wasn't a sidewalk hack or a temperamental star.

No, Jesus repaired the bruised reed. Jesus rekindled the flickering flame, the light became a torch. Jesus gave hope & mercy to the word - justice. Jesus didn't select a few, the light of Jesus Christ is for all. Not just to the eyes blessed to see Him, but those who look to Him in faith, after He died, and today.

“Behold, my servant whom I have chosen,

John 21:6-14 ~ it is the Lord

Volto Santo or Holy Face. Pope Benedict XVI visited the image September 1, 2006. The image is made of byssus, which is linen woven from a fine, yellowish flax referred to as sea silk; a silky filament by which certain mollusks attach themselves to hard surfaces. It is impossible to paint on the material, it may only be dyed one shade as it is woven. No one understands how this image came to be. The image cannot be dated or the information is not given. I've seen this with the Vatican treasures displayed in the Houston Museum of Science, the Dead Sea Scroll tour. It was explained as being the Cloth of Veronica. The image appeared when a woman gave Jesus a cloth to wipe his face, during Jesus' carrying His cross.

John 21:6-14

6 He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, because of the quantity of fish. 7 That disciple whom Jesus loved therefore said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment, for he was stripped for work, and threw himself into the sea. 8 The other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards off.

9 When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place, with fish laid out on it, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” 11 So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, 153 of them. And although there were so many, the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” Now none of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish. 14 This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.


People have interesting reactions. Put Morgan Freeman, or George Burns, in a movie as God in a white suit, people generally love it. "The Shack" had a parable of God as a black woman and there was controversy.

John 7:24
Stop judging by mere appearances, and make a right judgment.

Having a visual image is something people like to have. We live in this world by making decisions based upon our own judgment. Time Magazine ran a cover of an image of Jesus far from our usual image. The story of Adam & Eve was confirmed with evidence of Mitochondrial Eve DNA, the Human MRCA. All humans alive today share a surprisingly recent common ancestor, perhaps even within the last 5000 years, even for people born on different continents. This man was made in the image of God. No mention is made of color.

Moses asked God for the ability to be able to see Him. Moses was rewarded with a glimpse of God.

Exodus 33:20-23
20 But," he said, "you cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live."

21 Then the LORD said, "There is a place near me where you may stand on a rock. 22 When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by. 23 Then I will remove my hand and you will see my back; but my face must not be seen."

What are we told about Jesus' appearance?

Isaiah 53:2
He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.

Just as there were many who were appalled at him — his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any man and his form marred beyond human likeness—


Luke 9:28-29
About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray. As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning

The Romans had taken over Judea at the time of Jesus. Time Magazine's image of Christ was of a similar to today haircut. Why is Jesus different, with "Jesus hair"? Jesus was from Nazareth and may have considered His appearance to be that of a Nazirite, one set apart in holiness from sin, no razor would have touched His hair. Numbers 6:1-27 Yet Jesus, did not follow the rules of the Nazirite in His life.

When we picture Father God in our minds in Love, we can do no wrong. Whatever we picture, we picture a parable. We have never been given the ability to see the vast attributes of God.

We know Jesus told us He did not have a possessions like a home, but He did have one fine garment, not the flowing Sheik robes we are shown all the time. And that garment was woven from top to bottom. I like to think it was made by someone loving Jesus.

We do not see Jesus' physical face, but we do know how people felt looking at Jesus.

Matthew 9:20-29
20 And behold, a woman who had suffered from a discharge of blood for twelve years came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment, 21 for she said to herself, “If I only touch his garment, I will be made well.”

Matthew 14:35-36
35 And when the men of that place recognized him, they sent around to all that region and brought to him all who were sick 36 and implored him that they might only touch the fringe of his garment. And as many as touched it were made well.

And how did Jesus react to the people who sought Him?

Matthew 9:22
22 Jesus turned, and seeing her he said, “Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And instantly the woman was made well.

Even if we do not have Jesus' face or Father God's face perfectly know to us, more importantly, Jesus, God, knows us.

Luke 19:1-6
He entered Jericho and was passing through. And there was a man named Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector and was rich. And he was seeking to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was small of stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was about to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.” So he hurried and came down and received him joyfully.

Father God, we know and love You by Your actions of mercy. Help us each day to see You more clearly and for You to see Yourself in our love. In Jesus' mercy. Amen.
