Mark's Gospel doesn't start with Christmas, Gabriel who stands in the Presence of God or Egypt. Why not? St. Mark's place at the table didn't place this as important. We all see from where God has placed us.
Causing me to wonder why, why was Egypt important? This week we were viewing the Amazing Exhibit of Egypt in Houston's Natural Museum of Science. The absolute and total care given to the complete belief of the Afterlife. The Love shown to each individual. There are statues of families, regular Egyptians, showing arms around one another. Names are placed on the mosaic statues. Rings given to the deceased instead of the grand children. Many of the artifacts are telling the gods - this one is worthy. It certainly beats being a skull under the subway. God has tenderness for all nations and Jesus is sent to the Egyptians.
Mark 1
1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
2 As it is written in Isaiah the prophet,
“Behold, I send my messenger before your face,
who will prepare your way,
3 the voice of one crying in the wilderness:
‘Prepare the way of the Lord,
make his paths straight,’”
Mark wants to cover and start at Isaiah. Being a Jew, cousin of Bartholomew and adopted as a son to Peter - Mark sees the Glory of Hezekiah and Isaiah. Rome has swept in to money, money the suburb of Syria - Judah has not seen so many cities and buildings in a long, long, long time. Isaiah 7 says there is so much money that wine is imported by ship. Forget the local produced since Moses and Joshua and tribal gifted land. Jesus speaks a lot about vineyards. Jesus is remembering a different time as He speaks of work, care, legacy and blessings of weather. Yes, there are vineyards but so many have ceased. Every thing Jesus says is rich and alive.
Into the opulence - Jesus arrives because of the Need. The Spiritual Hunger.
Mark has been reminded being with Peter in Rome, of Isaiah's School of Prophets. Jesus has 12 Disciples and then 72. The old times are alive again. And Mark knows being with Peter - this is amazingly Eternal of God.
The Scriptures are Real. St. Mark with St. Peter in Rome - are very aware where they are in His Story. Mark is beginning where he is. This is Mark's Seat at the Table of the Wedding of the Lamb. This is Mark's place in the Body of Christ Jesus.
Mark is writing the collections of Peter telling the People of Rome - 1st Century - the Words of Jesus that have grabbed him and taken effect on the people they want to know and read and hear and feel again and again. With the flavor of Peter and Mark understanding the world after Jesus Conquers Death and is Alive And Alive and Well.
Consider what we are saying. Jesus is not just alive in Heaven. Jesus is Alive on earth. Jesus is not the catacombs. Jesus is not the mummies. Jesus is not the piles of skulls or femurs. Jesus is Alive on the earth any and as many times - He desires to be here - bodily. This is the Culture of LIFE. Today. And Tomorrow.
Mark is writing of Jesus as walking down the street. Jesus eating fish. The Gospels show Jesus preparing a breakfast. No wonder everyone laying eyes on Jesus is blessed of eyes. Everyone put down what they were doing and entire towns came to hear Jesus preach and see the ill healed. "Jesus healed them all." Jesus makes the Exodus look small potatoes. The dead children are alive. Lazarus is alive. Two million people turned out to celebrate Jesus is Alive. Factoring in what Josephus says a multitude actually is - when the Disciples explain all of Israel knows.
Yes - the people want to know about Jesus. Amazing, Astonishing, Giving Son of God.
1 Peter 1:3
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead

Front, Back and Detail of Isaiah Bulla found at Royal Bakery, Ophel
Dr. Eilat Mazar believes the motif on the Isaiah Bulla is a grazing doe, symbolizing prosperity. (Interestingly, imagery of this is found in the book of Isaiah— Isaiah 11:6; 13:14 and 35:6.)
3rd Generation, Professor of Archaeology of Israel University - Dr. Eilat Mazar
According to Dr. Mazar, "In archaeology, context matters. When examining an artifact, the material surrounding the item plays a crucial role in determining and verifying its proper identity."
The ruins and artifacts surrounding the Isaiah bulla conclusively date to the First Temple period (in archaeological terms, Iron Age). We can know with certainty the Isaiah who owned this seal lived in Jerusalem between the ninth and seventh centuries B.C. The Prophet Isaiah lived in Jerusalem in the eighth century B.C.
But in this instance, we have even more archaeological context. The Isaiah seal was uncovered at the same time (2009) and in the same assemblage (collection of bullae and other artifacts) as the Hezekiah seal. It was discovered just a few feet from the Hezekiah bulla, and in exactly the same strata of soil.
And Hezekiah Bulla is just found every where due to the massive amounts of prosperity and trade.
4 John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
5 And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. 6 Now John was clothed with camel's hair and wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey. 7 And he preached, saying, “After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. 8 I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
9 In those days
9 In those days
Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.
11 And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”

Mark records John the Baptist felt completely unworthy. And what it would take to do all this is something of God Calling Irrevocably. Conclusively. Inexorably.
1 Peter 4:10
Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms.
12 The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. 13 And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him.
14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, 15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
16 Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee,

16 Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee,
he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 17 And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.”
John Mark was dismissed by Paul. Barnabas encouraged his cousin to stay with Jesus and the Way. Debate, debate, debate if John Mark is Mark. The Early Church was sure. Going with this idea, Mark would put in the beginning of a ministry with trouble.
1 Peter 4:11
If you speak, you should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If you serve, you should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.
1 Peter 5:7
Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

they left their nets and followed him. 19 And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets.

21 And they went into Capernaum, and immediately
on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and was teaching. 22 And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes.
23 And immediately
there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, 24 “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.”

25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” 26 And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him. 27 And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.”
St. Mark is far from home. Jesus chose the Land of Milk and Honey, His adult hometown was Capernaum. And we see the world so vast and impenetrable - connects. God's Purpose connects the earth - the fullness of the earth is His.
1 Peter 1:18
For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors
Suddenly, Judah (Syria's suburb according to the Romans) has new Architecture of worldly proportions, Herod's building of Caesarea:

28 And at once his fame spread everywhere
throughout
all the surrounding region of Galilee.
29 And immediately
he left the synagogue and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. 30 Now Simon's mother-in-law lay ill with a fever, and immediately they told him about her. 31 And he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her, and she began to serve them.
32 That evening at sundown they brought to him all who were sick or oppressed by demons. 33 And the whole city was gathered together at the door. 34 And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. And he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.
35 And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed. 36 And Simon and those who were with him searched for him, 37 and they found him and said to him,
“Everyone is looking for you.”
Mark and Peter were to find this was true - everyone was looking for Jesus - in Rome too.
1 Peter 3:15
In your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect

41 Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him, “I will; be clean.”
42 And immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean.
43 And Jesus sternly charged him and sent him away at once, 44 and said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, for a proof to them.”
45 But he went out and began to talk freely about it, and to spread the news, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter a town, but was out in desolate places,
and
