Matthew 9:1-8 ~ some people brought to Him

Matthew 9:1-8

And getting into a boat He crossed over and came to his own city.

And behold, some people brought to Him a paralytic, lying on a bed.

And when Jesus saw their faith,
He said to the paralytic,
“Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven.”

And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, “This man is blaspheming.”

But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts? 5 For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? 6 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”

—He then said to the paralytic—“Rise, pick up your bed and go home.”

And he rose and went home.

When the crowds saw it, they were afraid, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to men.

Daniel 2

Daniel said, "Let the name of God be blessed forever and ever, For wisdom and power belong to Him.

21 It is He who changes the times and the epochs; He removes kings and establishes kings; He gives wisdom to wise men And knowledge to men of understanding. 22 It is He who reveals the profound and hidden things; He knows what is in the darkness, And the light dwells with Him."

1 Thessalonians 5:11

Therefore encourage one another and build one another up,
just as you are doing.

Isaiah 51:11

So the ransomed of the LORD will return And come with joyful shouting to Zion, And everlasting joy will be on their heads. They will obtain gladness and joy, And sorrow and sighing will flee away.

Many times, Jesus healed and then asked the person to do something. To lean into the miracle. In this passage, Jesus asks the man to pick up his bed and go home. What would that look like, a pallet or bed?  It would depend on the wealth of the person.

A first century family in Galilee had Sleeping Quarters, sometimes located on the second floor and accessed by ladder, had beds made of wooden frames with rope stretched over them. A mat was then laid on each bed. The man asking his friend for bread, and being initially turned down, would have had this sleeping arrangement. He says, "I'm in bed and with my children." Simple mats don't cover this arrangement. A man on a mat isn't going to jostle the other mats.

We know Jesus slept with a cushion in the boat and He saved them from the storm. We know a paralyzed man isn't thrown in a hammock to lower him through the roof. More harm would follow.

So, this could be a mat with straw, simply to roll up like a big, cumbersome pillow. Or this could be a wooden pallet taken by a donkey, not having to carry a fully grown man who is paralyzed.  Either way, this Capernaum paralyzed man is going to create a stir to go home on his feet carrying something large enough to gather attention.

Jesus could have said, "Zach, carry Pete's mat." "Zach, go get Pete something to eat."  Or Jesus could have said, "Leave the mat for the poor." Instead, Jesus is asking the newly healed man to boldly witness by necessity.  Not grandiose aggrandizing.  Capernaum had 3,000 people.

The paralyzed man was known.

Now, instead, the man had wind in his sails. Places he could go. Witness of a changed life.
Jesus, Lord of wind.   And suddenly a noise like a violent rushing wind came from Heaven,
and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.

Our Father, Who Art in Heaven
Hallowed by Thy Name.

Thy Kingdom come,
Thy Will be done on earth
as it is in Heaven.

Give us this Day,
Our daily bread.

Forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass
against us.

Lead us not into temptation
and deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the Kingdom,
The Power
and the Glory.
Forever and ever. Amen

Bless us and cover us in
the Name of Jesus. Amen!

May the Lord
Bless us
and
Keep us
Causing His Face to Shine upon us.
And be gracious to us.

May the Lord Lift His Countenance
and Smile Upon us.
Give us Peace
Surround us and Bless us in the Name of Jesus Christ.
Amen.

Psalm 132 ~ Behold, we heard of it in Ephrathah; we found it in the fields of Jaar

Psalm 132

A Song of Ascents.

1 Remember, O LORD, in David's favor, all the hardships he endured, 2 how he swore to the LORD and vowed to the Mighty One of Jacob, 3 "I will not enter my house or get into my bed, 4 I will not give sleep to my eyes or slumber to my eyelids, 5 until I find a place for the LORD, a dwelling place for the Mighty One of Jacob."

6 Behold, we heard of it in Ephrathah; we found it in the fields of Jaar.

7 "Let us go to his dwelling place; let us worship at his footstool!"

8 Arise, O LORD, and go to your resting place, you and the ark of your might. 9 Let your priests be clothed with righteousness, and let your saints shout for joy.

10 For the sake of your servant David, do not turn away the face of your anointed one.

11 The LORD swore to David a sure oath from which he will not turn back: "One of the sons of your body I will set on your throne. 12 If your sons keep my covenant and my testimonies that I shall teach them, their sons also forever shall sit on your throne."

13 For the LORD has chosen Zion; he has desired it for his dwelling place:

14 "This is my resting place forever; here I will dwell, for I have desired it. 15 I will abundantly bless her provisions; I will satisfy her poor with bread. 16 Her priests I will clothe with salvation, and her saints will shout for joy. 17 There I will make a horn to sprout for David; I have prepared a lamp for my anointed. 18 His enemies I will clothe with shame, but on him his crown will shine."

The Psalms, in majority, are thoughts of David. Going back past his victory, to his work as a man in extreme conditions. We see Psalms from his childhood, where David knew the field of Jaar, we know to be the Shepherd's Field in Luke 2, Christmas.

we heard of it in Ephrathah; we found it in the fields of Jaar
Ephrathah is Bethlehem, Jaar is the Shepherd Field in the valley below Bethlehem.

David being from Bethlehem, to the field has literally ascended going home, every day after his work in the fields for his father. Ascend is his daily commute. Ascend was the path home to the ditch he lived in Ziklag, located at the top of a large hill. David's Palace is at the top of a hill of Jerusalem and outside the city walls. David used the Palace to see far in the distance. Like Bethlehem, a watchful place. Almost all the places David lived, required to ascend.

We learn, in David's upward life, he prays. David petitioned God for His mercy. David sees his life not as a mercenary, but in service to God in the anointed work God has given David.

As David prays, he visualizes being in the Kingdom of God. Prayer is worship. At God's feet.

Hebrews 4:16

Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace,
that we may receive mercy
and find grace
to help in time of need.

John 14:16

And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper
(Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby),
to be with you forever—

David invites God to rest. David is assured nothing is impossible to God. Or even hard work. The universe is upheld by the Power of His Word.  The Lord God Almighty is invited to sit on His Mercy Seat. The Ark of the Covenant.

David is seeing, in belief, the Lord's Prayer. If God is comfortable on earth near David, and His People, we will see more Heaven on earth. David lived in 500 B.C., we understand David is speaking with the Lord. And David's understanding of God is written by the Holy Spirit. The amazingly deft strokes, profoundly explaining the nature of God. So delicate, it's easy to just rush past the meaning.

David has invited God to be part of his life, evidently, very often, if not daily.

King David, or our David,  as part of the Holy Spirit, wants others to know the intimacy of God's Love, Joy and Comfort. David is teaching.  Righteousness is linked with Joy. Nehemiah said this too, The Joy of the Lord is My Strength.

David reminds God, David's situation and the people of his life are chosen to be God's People. A good reminder. David favors his people, mostly more than Moses. And David reminds himself in prayer, loyalty.

God answers David. David prays what God's heart would love. And the echo is the agreement with God. David is so comfortable with God, he is himself, and speaks to God as a Father and a friend. Worshiping His Righteousness and Joy.

Ascend becomes part of worship. As the song goes forth, the choir ascends God's Temple steps. Displaying the gratitude David has. Ascend is deliberate. Ascend is the dedication of communication, prayer, with Abba. Jesus went to the High Places to pray.

David has been taught about Jacob. Jacob, in his odd life, gives reassurance God's Love is Steadfast.  David's life teaches us the same about God and His Steadfast Love.

Jesus gives us the Hope and Future to ascend with.

Joshua 1:9
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Romans 8:28
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

Philippians 4:13
I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.

Proverbs 4:23
Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.

Proverbs 22:6
Train up a child in the way he should go;
even when he is old he will not depart from it.

Ephesians 6:11
Put on the whole armor of God, that you may
be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.

 Psalm 118:24
This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Romans 15:13
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing,
so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

Abba, Father,

1 Remember, O LORD, in David's favor, all the hardships he endured, 2 how he swore to the LORD and vowed to the Mighty One of Jacob, 3 "I will not enter my house or get into my bed, 4 I will not give sleep to my eyes or slumber to my eyelids, 5 until I find a place for the LORD, a dwelling place for the Mighty One of Jacob."

Train us up to become children of God,  who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. And we will not depart from Your Ways.

6 Behold, we heard of it in Ephrathah; we found it in the fields of Jaar.

I have set the Lord
always
before me;
because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.

Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure. For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption. You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore

7 "Let us go to his dwelling place; let us worship at his footstool!"

May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart,
be pleasing in Your sight. O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.

Abide in me, and I in you.
As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself,
unless it abides in the Vine,
unless You abide in me.

8 Arise, O LORD, and go to your resting place, you and the ark of your might. 9 Let your priests be clothed with righteousness, and let your saints shout for joy.

For He has put all things under Christ's feet. Nothing is too hard for God. All things are possible with God.

10 For the sake of your servant David,
do not turn away the face of your anointed one.

Your Steadfast Love endures Forever.

11 The LORD swore to David a sure oath from which he will not turn back: "One of the sons of your body I will set on your throne. 12 If your sons keep my covenant and my testimonies that I shall teach them, their sons also forever shall sit on your throne."

The Word of the Lord endures forever.

13 For the LORD has chosen Zion; he has desired it for
His dwelling place:

14 "This is my resting place forever; here I will dwell, for I have desired it. 15 I will abundantly bless her provisions; I will satisfy her poor with bread. 16 Her priests I will clothe with salvation, and her saints will shout for joy. 17 There I will make a horn to sprout for David; I have prepared a lamp for my anointed. 18 His enemies I will clothe with shame, but on him his crown will shine."

May Your Will be done on earth
as it is in Heaven!

Blessed be the Highest Name of Jesus Christ.
Blessed are the people who abide in Him.
Live in us, Abba,
And in Your Love we will daily
find the mercy of Your Love
fulfilling Your Word.
Bless those I love.

Uphold Your Kingdom on earth as it is in Heaven
and we will finish well in Jesus Christ
AMEN

Mark 9:2-13 ~ up a high mountain by themselves

Mark 9:2-13

2 And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves.

And he was transfigured before them, 3 and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one on earth could bleach them.

4 And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus.

5 And Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here.

Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 6 For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified.

7 And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son; listen to him.”

8 And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus only.

9 And as they were coming down the mountain,

Mount Tabor Israel

He charged them to tell no one what they had seen, until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.

10 So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what this rising from the dead might mean.

11 And they asked Him, “Why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?”

12 And He said to them, “Elijah does come first to restore all things. And how is it written of the Son of Man that he should suffer many things and be treated with contempt? 13 But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did to him whatever they pleased, as it is written of him.”

When we picture the Transfiguration of Jesus, we probably remember hearing this all of our lives.  And for numerous people, they have to glaze over. How can we relate to the Glory of God made Manifest?

And we have some idea of what we picture as the Transfiguration, which seems pretty far out.
I'd, probably, disagree with the photos above. Jesus took care to show His Body ate fish and breakfast and was solid. Most likely, Moses and Elijah were solid, or more accurately phrased, 'present in the body.'

Who has trouble with the Glory of God? Moses' wife. Zechariah, Joseph, Mary, Mary's parents, Jesus' Brothers goading Him. The crowd, the Pharisees.  Herod. Pontius Pilate. Everyone. Disciples.

Except, Peter's portion in the New Testament has quite a lot of insight into Moses and Genesis!

And when we feel overwhelmed, we tend to turn the channel and think of other things. Instead, remember Jesus fixing breakfast on the Shore of the Sea of Galilee. Come back, Jesus invites.

God doesn't generally put on a show. Instead, God moves with Love, Encouragement, Deliberation in Fulfilling His Word. Grace upon Grace. And when we know God is orderly instead of chaotic, we know the Transfiguration had a plan.

Two Separate Artists depicting the same event.

Peter was about to be able to give ideas and motivation to the entire Purpose of Christ Jesus. To the millenniums of God's Children.  If Peter had seen the Transfiguration, already, Peter was going to be more ... let's be polite and say, Prepared.

God gives gifts to men. And this time Preparedness was one of the gifts, in probability.

When Jesus healed the widow of Nain's son, this was uncharacteristic of Jesus. Usually, Jesus was giving healing, very deliberately, in relationship. One to one.  Our prayer lives are deliberately one on One daily.  The widow of Nain's son was healed very publicly. Jesus was explaining, "To all of Israel" about Resurrection.

Jesus knew Herod believed Jesus was reincarnated from John the Baptist. How? Om in what type of years?!? Herod didn't think about God a lot, evidently. Once Herod invited Jesus to visit and Jesus fobbed this off by calling Herod a fox. When Herod is this dissuaded, one would think Herod wasn't really terribly interested.

Jesus was not raising ghosts in Moses and Elijah. Jesus explains clearly, "God is God of the Living." Jesus was preparing the Body of Christ to see the Physical Presence of the Body of Jesus Christ, Living and Triumphant.

Still feeling glazed? Jesus also said the work of all mankind is to believe the One He has Sent.

And why was Ascension necessary? Jesus is in relationship with His Disciples. And All of Israel knows about Jesus and the Resurrection. Jesus wanted His Children to understand where Jesus is - Today. John brought us more Word of God about Living Triumphant Jesus as the walls dropped about 60 years after Jesus was Grace upon Grace in His Ministry. Suddenly, John was in the Presence of Jesus in His Kingdom. This is Transfiguration as well.

What would make a good pairing with this passage of Mark's Gospel?  Matthew 22 verses answer this nicely.

Mark 22:29, 32

Know  the Scriptures and the power of God.

32"‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’?
He is not God of the dead, but of the living.”

Abba, Father

We are all traveling in the footsteps
Of those that'd come before

And we'll all be reunited
On that new and sunlit shore

When the Saints go marching in
When the Saints go marching in
Lord, how I want to be in that number
When the Saints go marching in

And when the sun refuses to shine
When the sun refuses to shine

Lord, how I want to be in that number
When the Saints go marching in
Oh, when the Saints go marching in
Oh, when the Saints go marching in

Oh, how I want to be there on that morning
When the Saints go marching in

When the trumpet sounds its call
When the trumpet sounds its call

Oh, how I want be in that number
When the trumpet sounds its call

Oh, when the Saints go marching in
When the Saints go marching in

Lord, how I want to be in that number
Oh, when the Saints go marching in

Now some say, some say this world of trouble
Is the only world we'll ever see
But I'm waiting for that morning
When the new world is revealed

Oh, when the new world is revealed
Oh, when the new world is revealed
Lord, how I want to be there on that morning

When the new world is revealed
Oh, when the Saints (oh, when the Saints)

Go marching in (marching in)
When the Saints go marching in
Lord, I want be in that number

When the Saints go marching in

Lord, how I want
(Lord, how I want)
To be in that number (to be in that number)
When the Saints go marching in!

Amen in Jesus Christ dwelling in us,
Jesus dwelling in those we love,
Seeking Jesus first,
Ending well in Jesus Christ.

Amen to His Glory. Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Holy Spirit carried men along, moving and guiding them as they wrote in their own words what God wanted them to say. The Bible is unique; comprised of 80 separate books, & written over a period of thousands of years by more than 40 writers with one Author, spanning the centuries, different states of peace & war & different situations in life.
