Joshua 5:9a, 10-12
The LORD said to Joshua,
“Today I have removed the reproach of Egypt from you.”
While the Israelites were encamped at Gilgal
on the plains of Jericho
They celebrated the Passover
on the evening of the fourteenth of the month.
On the day after the Passover,
they ate of the produce of the land
In the form of unleavened cakes and parched grain.
On that same day after the Passover,
on which they ate of the produce of the land, the manna ceased.
No longer was there manna for the Israelites,
who that year ate of the yield of the land of Canaan.
In John's Gospel, Chapter 6, Jesus walks on water, to the boat with the Disciples and "immediately" they have reached the other side 12 or more miles away. Immediately is in the Gospels many times.
For the rest of the Scriptures, the passage of time is more considered to be time as we understand. Seasons of Time, like Lent.
Joshua 5 is a celebration. A HUGE CELEBRATION. 40 Years of the Exodus is complete. It is not the beginning of the Signs in Egypt, rocking their civilization and treasury. The loss of the labor force. Death in the family.
It's not crossing the Red Sea, quickly, to spend so many years in the Desert. This is the end of the manna we would all like to experience one day, in Heaven. It is the first steps of Independence from Slavery, the beginning of Israel.
Passover. Less formal and, yet, grand day.
Exodus 12
- 11 In this manner you shall eat it: with your belt fastened, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand. And you shall eat it in haste. It is the Lord's Passover.
- 14 “This day shall be for you a memorial day, and you shall keep it as a feast to the Lord; throughout your generations, as a statute forever, you shall keep it as a feast. 15 Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread.
- 16b No work shall be done on those days. But what everyone needs to eat, that alone may be prepared by you.
- 26 And when your children say to you, ‘What do you mean by this service?’ 27 you shall say, ‘It is the sacrifice of the Lord's Passover, for he passed over the houses of the people of Israel in Egypt, when he struck the Egyptians but spared our houses.’” And the people bowed their heads and worshiped.
- 43 And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “This is the statute of the Passover: no foreigner shall eat of it, 44 but every slave that is bought for money may eat of it after you have circumcised him.
- 45 No foreigner or hired worker may eat of it.
- 48 If a stranger shall sojourn with you and would keep the Passover to the Lord, let all his males be circumcised. Then he may come near and keep it; he shall be as a native of the land.
- 49 There shall be one law for the native and for the stranger who sojourns among you.
This is the Word of the Lord and has tremendous implications for putting Scripture in our daily lives in application.
The passage of time, we understand, as we have decades to see the changes. The Lord is dealing with us, suddenly understanding our lives in new ways.
The Lord has lanes to travel in. His inclusion is ... mindful and considerate. He considers His Word, Way, Truth and Life to be Holy. We speak of equity. God speaks of Freedom. And a Hope and Future.
When people discuss the child Patrick grew out of in slavery, they see a teenager willing to follow God. And then a young man, dreaming again, The Lord has spoken to Him. Like Abraham, Patrick is faithful.
When Patrick arrived in Ireland, the second time, the first time he is enslaved again, the Master of the House declares Patrick to be his property. Without the benefits of humanity and independence. Patrick was valued for his caring heart, his literacy, and the usefulness of being fluent in Latin, with his knowledge of culture, being educated with Biblical knowledge in a Roman Empire world. The Master of the House, saw Patrick as very beneficial in a trade-based economy. During his slavery, Patrick had explained trade within the Empire, he had witnessed in the Britain Roman world he knew. Patrick had enriched his slavery household.
Patrick, resisted and explained his resistance. The Master of the House used solitary confinement. Only the Wife of the House, realizing this was someone who cared for them and risked his life to return, did not want Patrick broken. His wife saw the Light of God in Patrick. And as the wife of the householder freely stated her opinion, those Patrick had helped began to feel a Work of God was within reach.
The LORD said to Joshua,
“Today I have removed the reproach of Egypt from you.”
Just as the Gospels record, Mary, Joseph and their family were considered a seamless family adding value to the community. Patrick had the same blessing.
Patrick was a stranger to their Celtic way of life, but not a stranger, instead someone who had worked with them and made life more abundant. The history reflects they gave Patrick a Prodigal Servant Party.

They celebrated the Passover

Patrick is not a settled member of the Community.
Instead, more nomadic like Abraham. And yet, eventually, with trials and sad circumstance, the Householders would be the ones to intervene for Patrick as slave capture began to happen outside the Household.
And we know, Patrick's life changed again. He was considered to be a Priest. And that carried more abundance in his life. And then to be accepted as such.
Patrick's life would change again. He would have a Church, more a chapel really. And then be invited to another small island to duplicate the success God was providing. And Changing again as the effective Archbishop of Ireland.
We can be assured, St. Patrick was not offering the Body of Jesus Christ and Communion to the slave raiders and the human murdering Druids. This was part of the evolution we see in mankind. The Work of God.
Jesus' ministry also reflects the changes of life and the immediacy of His Ministry as the Christ of God. His only Son. The Author of Life. And our Only Salvation. The Grace upon Grace Jesus gives us all.
The Grace upon Grace for our hope of redemption and not slavery. The changes in Patrick's life reflect the life of Freedom. Freedom of Choice. Freedom of Change. Jesus was asked by the people of Crete to come and escape Herod. Jesus said instead He would do the Will of His Father.
Freedom.
