On a statue of Amenhotep III at Kom el Hetan - Amenhotep’s funeral statue has a base and on the base of the statue is "Joseph-el". Joseph of God. Referring to Joseph who predicted the huge famine, and became Visor to Pharaoh. Joseph Messenger of God.
Genesis 42:24-38
Then he turned away from them and wept. And he returned to them and spoke to them. And he took Simeon from them and bound him before their eyes. 25 And Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain, and to replace every man's money in his sack, and to give them provisions for the journey. This was done for them.
26 Then they loaded their donkeys with their grain and departed. 27 And as one of them opened his sack to give his donkey fodder at the lodging place, he saw his money in the mouth of his sack. 28 He said to his brothers, “My money has been put back; here it is in the mouth of my sack!” At this their hearts failed them, and they turned trembling to one another, saying, “What is this that God has done to us?”
29 When they came to Jacob their father in the land of Canaan, they told him all that had happened to them, saying, 30 “The man, the lord of the land, spoke roughly to us and took us to be spies of the land. 31 But we said to him, ‘We are honest men; we have never been spies. 32 We are twelve brothers, sons of our father. One is no more, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Canaan.’
33 Then the man, the lord of the land, said to us, ‘By this I shall know that you are honest men: leave one of your brothers with me, and take grain for the famine of your households, and go your way. 34 Bring your youngest brother to me. Then I shall know that you are not spies but honest men, and I will deliver your brother to you, and you shall trade in the land.’”
35 As they emptied their sacks, behold, every man's bundle of money was in his sack. And when they and their father saw their bundles of money, they were afraid.
36 And Jacob their father said to them, “You have bereaved me of my children: Joseph is no more, and Simeon is no more, and now you would take Benjamin. All this has come against me.”
37 Then Reuben said to his father, “Kill my two sons if I do not bring him back to you. Put him in my hands, and I will bring him back to you.”
38 But he said, “My son shall not go down with you, for his brother is dead, and he is the only one left. If harm should happen to him on the journey that you are to make, you would bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to Sheol.”
We read the Chapter and all happens rapidly. Only the Gospels of Jesus have the word immediate occur so often. And Jacob is Israel. He is supposed to be in the flow of the Holy Spirit and understand going back to Egypt. Instead, Jacob decides having the sons he has taken care of for years, and in famine, are not leaving again.
That's that.
Except … The Lord provides His History is His Plan. We know they went back to greater intensions of God.
And in this chapter, we see actions reveal character.
Reuben, jumps forward to be the solution. We know Reuben had been the only child of Jacob, the day Joseph was sold, to try to save Joseph. Then Reuben buried his guilt and went with the lie. Saving Jacob from being a tumbleweed blowing all through life, unable to find the slave traders. Wasting their lives in a fruitless gesture.
And in this understanding of the true nature of these, “sons of Jacob,” Reuben offers death as the solution. In the midst of this Scripture, Reuben offers child sacrifice. Something the sons of Abraham have not done. It's a strange offer. Did he believe this of his father? Or did Reuben believe it was like a child pretending to hold his breathe and childishly thinking the parents would panic. Was this the influence of living among the Canaanites? Words reflecting the Canaanites diplomacy?
We do know Reuben lived with a strong guilt to offer this plea.
We know Jacob was a seeker of Blessings, but unlike Isaac, Jacob wanted everyone to know the Lord's Promises and Blessings. And we know what Jacob's dependable response as a father will be.
The sons of Jacob are living a season of a long, long Lent.
Matthew 13:32-33
It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown
it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree,
so that
the birds of the air come
and
make nests in its branches.
Galatians 3:29
And if you belong to Christ,
then you are Abraham’s seed and heirs according to the promise.
Romans 4:13-18
For the promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith. 14 For if it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. 15 For the law brings wrath, but where there is no law there is no transgression.
16 That is why it depends on faith
In order that the Promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his offspring—not only to the adherent of the law but also to the one who shares the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all, 17 as it is written, “I have made you the father of many nations”—in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist. 18 In hope he believed against hope, that he should become the father of many nations, as he had been told, “So shall your offspring be.”
Galatians 3:29
And if you belong to Christ,
then you are Abraham’s seed and heirs according to the promise.
Romans 4:3
For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God,
and it was counted to him
as righteousness.”
Genesis 15:6
Abram believed the LORD,
and it was credited to him as righteousness.
James 2:23
And the Scripture was fulfilled that says,
“Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,”
and he was called a friend of God.
Romans 10:10

and are justified,
and with your mouth you confess
