Never did the taking of freedom or life itself become acceptable. 

Never was it acceptable to preach the necessity of evil.

 Of course, evil of this sort was taught, preached and glamorized.  The power of the powerful.  Even if the druids managed to teach, preach and out power and malign while murdering human beings, vocal dissenters, in human sacrifice and violently in bogs. 

Even if slaveholders had the power to end life. 

Forgiveness might have been preached to the powerless, but the Saints fought the good fight.
