Exodus 3
Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. 2 There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. 3 So Moses thought, “I will go over and see this strange sight—why the bush does not burn up.”
4 When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!”
And Moses said, “Here I am.”
5 “Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.” 6 Then he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.” At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God.
7 The Lord said, “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering. 8 So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey—the home of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. 9 And now the cry of the Israelites has reached me, and I have seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing them. 10 So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.”
11 But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”
12 And God said, “I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.”
13 Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?”
14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’”
15 God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.’
“This is my name forever,
the name you shall call me
from generation to generation.
16 “Go, assemble the elders of Israel and say to them, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob—appeared to me and said: I have watched over you and have seen what has been done to you in Egypt. 17 And I have promised to bring you up out of your misery in Egypt into the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites—a land flowing with milk and honey.’
18 “The elders of Israel will listen to you. Then you and the elders are to go to the king of Egypt and say to him, ‘The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us. Let us take a three-day journey into the wilderness to offer sacrifices to the Lord our God.’ 19 But I know that the king of Egypt will not let you go unless a mighty hand compels him. 20 So I will stretch out my hand and strike the Egyptians with all the wonders that I will perform among them. After that, he will let you go.
21 “And I will make the Egyptians favorably disposed toward this people, so that when you leave you will not go empty-handed. 22 Every woman is to ask her neighbor and any woman living in her house for articles of silver and gold and for clothing, which you will put on your sons and daughters. And so you will plunder the Egyptians.”
When we say Lord, the Hebrew sounds like "I Am". And God says, "I will be what I will be."
God is God. That, for us - today - is - Good News!
God uses Fire of the Holy Spirit in this passage. We lived through the largest fire in history in 2011 for my tri-county area. Fire is like Timothy 3:16
Great indeed, we confess,
is the mystery of godliness:
He was manifested in the flesh,
vindicated by the Spirit,
seen by angels,
proclaimed among the nations,
believed on in the world,
taken up in glory!
The mystery of this Holy Spirit fire is the way God would act. God will act as the Father of all. God will do exactly what God will do. People in healing ministries say the way God heals is mysterious. The who God picks is mysterious. God is God.
The Gospel tells us when God says He uses Fire - be prepared...
1 Peter 1:7
So that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
Hebrews 4:12
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
I was in a Bible Study this week where we spoke of the Fire of the Holy Spirit - GOING FORTH - MOVING. We numbered in the teens and no one felt like yelling, "Yay!" One dear and good, inspirational soul put on her sunglasses before we prayed the ending prayer. Another person looked like weeping. And asked - "Is there Hope?"
YES! A resounding Hope. A Hope and Glory in Faith and Love. God repeating His Work and His Victory in suffering, endurance and character. Love. This Battle has One Victor. One Victory. God and His People.
Deuteronomy 20:1
When you go to war against your enemies and see horses and chariots and an army greater than yours, do not be afraid of them, because the LORD your God, who brought you up out of Egypt, will be with you.
Joshua 1:7
Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go.
2 Chronicles 32:8
With him is only the arm of flesh, but with us is the LORD our God to help us and to fight our battles.
The King of Glory. Jesus Christ the Lord. This is the One who is Good. The One to keep looking to.
1 Thessalonians
You are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief. 5 For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness. 6 So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober. 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, are drunk at night.
8 But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation.
9 For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep we might live with him. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.
Proclaiming God's Love to Spread the Fire of the Holy Spirit!
When we look at a Great Work of God in progress - recall with me Moses often felt discouraged. We can feel discouraged in our own lives. God as Father will remind us again of the gifts, talents, and loving soul He assures us He loves.
1 Peter 5:10
And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.
Psalm 71:20
You who have made me see many troubles and calamities will revive me again; from the depths of the earth you will bring me up again.
Ephesians 2:8
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.
God is unique and unparalleled. His Mighty Works begin quietly like a fire on a mountain side. God asked us to aspire to have quiet lives. Work with what is at hand. The Narrow path. Fire is exactly like that. Where fire is hottest and most productive as a tool that mankind uses is - the center. And in that center - are the people God would have in our lives. These are the people God asks us to - Love.
This week a beloved, beloved person in my life said tragedy had struck God from his prayer life. God will still heal. This is the nature of God. And I wondered how to speak. I reminded this wonderful and beloved child of God about the times his soul shone auspiciously. The display God has provided showing us - we are the Light of Christ. God Loves first. We need to be reminded again and again. Thunder calls to thunder. Light to Light. Love is God. God is Love. Within us is the Holy Spirit and His Works are Vast. Salvation is God's and He will endure, prevail and have the Victory. Love never ends.
