Genesis 27 ~ Getting to know you, Getting to know all about you


Genesis 27 ~ He said, "Are you really my son Esau?"

Genesis 27:1-45


When Isaac was old and his eyes were dim so that he could not see, he called Esau his older son and said to him, “My son”; and he answered, “Here I am.” 2 He said, “Behold, I am old; I do not know the day of my death. 3 Now then, take your weapons, your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field and hunt game for me, 4 and prepare for me delicious food, such as I love, and bring it to me so that I may eat, that my soul may bless you before I die.”

5 Now Rebekah was listening when Isaac spoke to his son Esau. So when Esau went to the field to hunt for game and bring it, 6 Rebekah said to her son Jacob, “I heard your father speak to your brother Esau, 7 ‘Bring me game and prepare for me delicious food, that I may eat it and bless you before the Lord before I die.’ 8 Now therefore, my son, obey my voice as I command you. 9 Go to the flock and bring me two good young goats, so that I may prepare from them delicious food for your father, such as he loves. 10 And you shall bring it to your father to eat, so that he may bless you before he dies.” 11 But Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, “Behold, my brother Esau is a hairy man, and I am a smooth man. 12 Perhaps my father will feel me, and I shall seem to be mocking him and bring a curse upon myself and not a blessing.” 13 His mother said to him, “Let your curse be on me, my son; only obey my voice, and go, bring them to me.”


14 So he went and took them and brought them to his mother, and his mother prepared delicious food, such as his father loved. 15 Then Rebekah took the best garments of Esau her older son, which were with her in the house, and put them on Jacob her younger son. 16 And the skins of the young goats she put on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck. 17 And she put the delicious food and the bread, which she had prepared, into the hand of her son Jacob.


18 So he went in to his father and said, “My father.” 

And he said, “Here I am. Who are you, my son?”

19 Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn. I have done as you told me; now sit up and eat of my game, that your soul may bless me.” 

20 But Isaac said to his son, “How is it that you have found it so quickly, my son?” 

He answered, “Because the Lord your God granted me success.” 
21 Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Please come near, that I may feel you, my son, to know whether you are really my son Esau or not.” 22 So Jacob went near to Isaac his father, who felt him and said, “The voice is Jacob's voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau.” 23 And he did not recognize him, because his hands were hairy like his brother Esau's hands. So he blessed him.

 24 He said, “Are you really my son Esau?” 

He answered, “I am.” 

25 Then he said, “Bring it near to me, that I may eat of my son's game and bless you.” So he brought it near to him, and he ate; and he brought him wine, and he drank.

26 Then his father Isaac said to him, “Come near and kiss me, my son.” 27 So he came near and kissed him. And Isaac smelled the smell of his garments and blessed him and said,


“See, the smell of my son

is as the smell of a field that the Lord has blessed!
28 May God give you of the dew of heaven
and of the fatness of the earth
and plenty of grain and wine.
29 Let peoples serve you,
and nations bow down to you.
Be lord over your brothers,
and may your mother's sons bow down to you.
Cursed be everyone who curses you,
and blessed be everyone who blesses you!”

30 As soon as Isaac had finished blessing Jacob, when Jacob had scarcely gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, Esau his brother came in from his hunting. 31 He also prepared delicious food and brought it to his father. And he said to his father, “Let my father arise and eat of his son's game, that you may bless me.” 

32 His father Isaac said to him, “Who are you?”

 He answered, “I am your son, your firstborn, Esau.” 

33 Then Isaac trembled very violently and said, “Who was it then that hunted game and brought it to me, and I ate it all before you came, and I have blessed him? Yes, and he shall be blessed.” 34 As soon as Esau heard the words of his father, he cried out with an exceedingly great and bitter cry and said to his father, “Bless me, even me also, O my father!” 35 But he said, “Your brother came deceitfully, and he has taken away your blessing.” 

36 Esau said, “Is he not rightly named Jacob? For he has cheated me these two times. He took away my birthright, and behold, now he has taken away my blessing.” Then he said, “Have you not reserved a blessing for me?” 

37 Isaac answered and said to Esau, “Behold, I have made him lord over you, and all his brothers I have given to him for servants, and with grain and wine I have sustained him. What then can I do for you, my son?” 

38 Esau said to his father, “Have you but one blessing, my father? Bless me, even me also, O my father.” And Esau lifted up his voice and wept.

39 Then Isaac his father answered and said to him:


“Behold, away from the fatness of the earth shall your dwelling be,

and away from the dew of heaven on high.
40 By your sword you shall live,
and you shall serve your brother;
but when you grow restless
you shall break his yoke from your neck.”

41 Now Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father had blessed him, and Esau said to himself, “The days of mourning for my father are approaching; then I will kill my brother Jacob.” 42 But the words of Esau her older son were told to Rebekah. So she sent and called Jacob her younger son and said to him, “Behold, your brother Esau comforts himself about you by planning to kill you. 43 Now therefore, my son, obey my voice. Arise, flee to Laban my brother in Haran 44 and stay with him a while, until your brother's fury turns away— 45 until your brother's anger turns away from you, and he forgets what you have done to him. Then I will send and bring you from there. Why should I be bereft of you both in one day?”

God doesn't need to take any time to get to know us.

He did not need man's testimony about man, for he knew what was in a man.



God has gathered up all their prayers.

If life is problem-solving, 

Isaac is having a heck of a time. 
He knows and believes he is the Keeper of Abraham's Blessing "Cursed be everyone who curses you, and blessed be everyone who blesses you." 

And Isaac knows he is surrounded by Rebecca, who is his love, yet is a self-interested, chess player. 

And Jacob, the shifty son who already has Esau's birthright for a bowl of stew. You'd think Isaac would have put a caveat saying if you're Jacob, no dice on the blessing. 

However, Isaac did think he was dying, but held on for Jacob to grow up and return with all his sons. And Rebecca did herself in, that Leah, daughter in law was a long time in coming and then, oi vay, the bickering of two of them. More sibling rivalry.  More trouble.

We know from the Scriptures - Rebekah and Isaac will have troubles in life; the Scriptures tell us are part of life. In the midst of signs, births, prosperity, betrayal, all trouble and stages of life; we learn from Isaac’s life, forgiveness allows the Holy Spirit to help Isaac to end well. We can almost hear Father God say to Isaac, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

Is this a love story? Yes, we know it. We all root for Rebekah, in Genesis, to complete the sign and become Isaac’s wife. We all want the signs of God’s approval in our life. We know Rebekah will place her son’s prosperity over her husband’s peaceful illness and anticipated death. We know Isaac will still have Rebekah as his wife, when a life-time of years pass before the family is reunited in forgiveness. 


We know this miracle only can come from God.

A mess - Rebekah’s human nature will cause and allow, God knew what was in Rebekah’s heart and chose her to be part of His plan in fulfilling His promise to Abraham. Amazing.

 In Jesus, we are heirs of Abraham, we are grafted into God’s tree of life. God chose Rebekah and God chooses us, asks us, wants us to be part of His plan in this life and heirs to His eternal kingdom.


 



You would think the Scriptures would be more like Dick and Jane go to summer camp, meet and marry. Instead, you see life does strange things to families trying to get by. The one thing you can say for this Biblical family, they are still together after Lamon gets finished, decades later, working out his own issues on his son-in-law.


Romans 8:38
For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers,nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us

and to know this love that surpasses knowledge-
-that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless.


Abba, Father 

God, what delights You?
You delight with pleasure in those who have great understanding in Your 
might, wisdom and power. 
You delight in those who hope in Your steadfast love.

Father God, You take delight in Your people;
Dwell in us. Help us to seek You First.
And we will finish well.

Father God, You are With us. You are For us. 
You are the Mighty Warrior who saves.
Father God, take delight in us.

In Your Great Love, cover Your People with complete mercy and forgiveness. 
In the Highest Name of Jesus we are flawless. In Your Righteousness. 
Father God, Zephaniah 3 says You will rejoice over us in singing.

God's Spirit loves worship of Him and truth. He delights.

We will stay with You, Father God. You bring us forth to a spacious place. 
You rescue us because You delight in us. 
The Lord our Father God will rescue us because of His Righteousness.

Father God firmly establishes the feet of those on His path
with those who Delight in Father God.

Father God You delight, in the ones You have chosen, in the one You Love,
 where You place Your Holy Spirit,
 where the one you love proclaims Your Justice to the nations.

So don't be afraid, little flock. 
For it gives your Father great happiness to give you the Kingdom.
Help us to dwell in You
and seek You first.
In Jesus, we will finish well.

Jesus said, "Do not be afraid! It is I."

Father God will make known His delight and will continue to make known 
- His order and His love - 
Father God has for us, that this may be in us all and that Jesus may be known in us.

Father God delights so in Jesus that He is our Father. 
We are His Beloved Children, in Jesus, saying, "Your Father and Mine."




 Father God knows your path through this great wilderness and journey. 
These many years, the LORD your God has been with you. 
God has carried you these many years and He will safely lead you Home.







Father God, please dwell mightily in us and in our prayers exalt in You. 
We lift up  all the ones we love to You in Expectation.
 We pray for our Nation and this World to continue to know You.

Amen in the Highest Name of Jesus.

Exodus 20 ~ Jesus' Name to be remembered. I will come to you and bless you †

 



Exodus 20


And God spoke all these words, saying,

2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

3 “You shall have no other gods before me.

4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5 You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.

7 “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.

8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

13 “You shall not murder.

14 “You shall not commit adultery.

15 “You shall not steal.

16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

17 “You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's.”

18 Now when all the people saw the thunder and the flashes of lightning and the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking, the people were afraid and trembled, and they stood far off 19 and said to Moses, “You speak to us, and we will listen; but do not let God speak to us, lest we die.”

 20 Moses said to the people, “Do not fear, for God has come to test you, that the fear of Him may be before you, that you may not sin.” 21 The people stood far off, while Moses drew near to the thick darkness where God was.

22 And the Lord said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the people of Israel: ‘You have seen for yourselves that I have talked with you from heaven. 23 You shall not make gods of silver to be with me, nor shall you make for yourselves gods of gold. 

24 An altar of earth you shall make for me and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your oxen. In every place where I cause my name to be remembered I will come to you and bless you.

 25 If you make me an altar of stone, you shall not build it of hewn stones, for if you wield your tool on it you profane it. 26 And you shall not go up by steps to my altar, that your nakedness be not exposed on it.’





Not everyone is fond of Cathedrals.  Not everyone is comfortable when the 10 Commandments are read. Help. Helper. Comforter. And the 10 Commandments. Jesus walked as Grace upon Grace during His life with us.

The dark is not dark to God.

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.


This year, in Texas, we have had rain and amazing hours of thunder and lightning. God knows what the people, and pets, who fear thunder and lightning have done. 


1 Kings 19:11-13

Then the LORD said, “Go out and stand on the mountain before the LORD. 
Behold, the LORD is about to pass by.” 

And a great and mighty wind tore into the mountains and shattered the rocks 
before the LORD, 
but the LORD was not in the wind. 

After the wind there was an earthquake, 
but the LORD was not in the earthquake. 

12After the earthquake there was a fire, 
but the LORD was not in the fire. 

And after the fire came a still, small voice. 
13When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out 
and stood at the mouth of the cave. 

Suddenly a voice came to him and said, 
“What are you doing here, Elijah?


Cathedrals serve a purpose. 

Wondrous thoughts of the hours and dedication of men of art, architecture and vision have gifted us over hundreds and sometimes thousands of years. Kings like Charlemagne. When the King St. Edward died in 1066, he was succeeded by Harold Godwinson,  and in the same year overcome by William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings.


God the Almighty, Creator of All Things. Our Father Who Knows the Heavenly Host by name. 
Abba with us as we view the stars, babies, weddings. Moments we know Emmanuel, God with us. God within. 


We leave the cynical and the loud voices. Carve past what is overwhelming and loud. Connect with our Eternal and we have our souls to Jesus Christ. Brush past what is not for us and find the still, quiet voice within. Meaningful. Substantial. Up building. Encouraging. Loving.

Do you not know you are the Temple of God?  

‘You have seen for yourselves that I have talked with you from heaven. 

You shall not make gods of silver to be with me, nor shall you make for yourselves gods of gold. 

An altar of earth 
 sacrifice 
your peace offerings
your sheep and your oxen. 

In every place where I cause my name to be remembered 
I will come to you and bless you.

Make me an altar of stone, 
you shall not build it of hewn stones, what you hammer away in your efforts and thoughts
 for if you wield your tool on it you profane it. 

And you shall not go up by steps to my altar, 
that your nakedness be not exposed on it.’ 

We take our faith and we sacrifice what we have been told by so many opinions. And what we have not diligently and earnestly sought in our Eternal Jesus. We take what is precious and we take our rock foundation and make stone, we hack and hack upon. We hammer away. And we make our nakedness something we wish not to expose.

Jesus, our Jesus, knows this.



 Mark 9:24 
 After Jesus questioned the father, Jesus told him, 
“All things are possible for one who believes.” 

 “Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, 
'I believe; help my unbelief! '”

The candles don't just represent when we know our hearts are engaged fully in our love for Jesus. The candles are the enduring Love God holds steadfastly for all the prayers we don't even have the warm feeling for. The Promises of God are sure. Our God pays attention to us, gives us the assurance we should look for more Heaven on earth. Knowing our Jesus would listen to us, always. The gates of Heaven never close and prayer is always heard.



2 Kings 20:5a

 “Turn back, and say to my people, 
Thus says the Lord, the God of David your father: 
I have heard your prayer, 
I have seen your tears."



Angels are written to be Messengers of Fire.

Jesus is the Light of the world.
Light of mankind.











Abba, Father,


Help us, in Jesus, not to be in error 
because
we ask Jesus to dwell in us.
We want to know the Scriptures 
and the power of God.

We ask to see more Heaven on earth
believing Your Will is good.

Your child speaks to Your open heart. I believe in Your Promises. We pray for the prosperity of goodness. For good hopes and faith giving us good health. Our souls' prosperity.

Dwell in us and those we Love.
Help us to seek You first
and finish well.

We commit our work, personally, to You, Father. 
Establish those who love You.

We ask for the coming years to have prosperity financially and in Spirit. That our pleasure in building our nation, our families, our Churches, our businesses delights You as well. 

We ask for life to be quiet from strife, from unneeded fears and concerns. 
 Your people will have wisdom to ask and motivate peace, kindness and love. 
Help us to manage our lives wisely, others are encouraged to do this as well.  

In practical concerns You share like housing and affordability, beauty, safety.  
And in the peace, give mercy. 

Our refuge is in You, Jesus, Light of the world and mankind. Amen.

Psalm 119:49-56 ~ Remember Your Word to your servant, in which You have made me hope.



Psalm 119:49-56

Zayin

Remember your word to your servant,
in which you have made me hope.
This is my comfort in my affliction,
that your promise gives me life.

The insolent utterly deride me,
but I do not turn away from your law.
When I think of your rules from of old,
I take comfort, O Lord.

Hot indignation seizes me because of the wicked,
who forsake your law.
Your statutes have been my songs
in the house of my sojourning.

I remember your name in the night, O Lord,
and keep your law.

This blessing has fallen to me,
that I have kept your precepts.




If you've seen FB, you probably know by now Psalm 119 is the longest Chapter in the Bible and is considered to be the exact middle. Twenty-two stanzas in the Hebrew alphabet and for Psalm 119. One stanza for each letter. This is elaborate framework for... prayer.






It's said (just Zayin) David used Psalm 119 to teach Solomon the alphabet and to write. Not just the alphabet - the alphabet of the spiritual life. An excellent beginning.

Remember your word to your servant, in which you have made me hope.

If only. If only Abram had this Psalm of prayer. And that treasured son, Isaac. Why didn't God say upon Isaac He would be named Israel. Makes sense, Abram became Abraham. Isaac to Israel. But no dice. Isaac was a good, faithful man. He married the blessing Abraham and Sarah sought - their kin Rebecca. It was a miraculous occurrence. There was a marriage only to one woman. Surely, one man could create the nation Yahweh told Abram about. That makes such sense. Isaac wasn't handed servant women. Didn't marry sisters. And Isaac was certainly willing to believe he carried Abraham's great blessing to be given to the next generation.

There was just one small hitch. Isaac adhered to the law. And grew blind. Spiritually blind. He believed only one of his children would be blessed of God. And only for birth order as a tradition in culture. People are funny, what they believe.

I've heard people, entire large, significant congregations bustling with people say - Jesus made rock soup. Surely, you've heard the children's book about Rock Soup. A man is hungry and starts with clean stones in a vat of water, promising soup. One by one people put in leeks, potatoes, tomatoes, corn, etc. And at the end of the book - voilà - it takes a village and we have soup. Soup is also a slang term for chemical glop.

Now, if Jesus made rock soup instead of - loaves and fishes feeding the multitudes on several occasions... why did He hide out and say the crowd was only there for the blessing. And if people were contributing their picnic supplies - why do we see only left over loaves and fish.
This miracle celebrates the Exodus being fed for 40 years.  Why not a basket filled with figs, cheese, dates, nuts, pomegranates, herring, cod, olives, and grains? Instead, only the food Jesus started with is left over. The people were fed by Jesus. Who is God's incarnate Word. How do we know? Remember your word to your servant, in which you have made me hope. Hope - God is who He says He is and His promises are sure. Faith - Those promises are for me. Love - have strength to comprehend the breadth, length, height and depth, the love of Christ surpassing knowledge and filling us with all the fullness of God.

How do we Know? Remember your word to your servant, in which you have made me hope. The Work God gives man is to believe. 

Jacob believed something larger was possible in God. Something as vast as the Universe. More like C.S. Lewis. God is not a tame Lion.

Malachi 3:10
Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the LORD of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.

Jacob was indeed all in. Willing to let the Wind of God push him. To fight God for a blessing until dawn believing even in the fight God would want to bless. Believing mere words were a blessing. Words. Words of God. And at the end of his life, he was never asked by his sons to forgive their deceit, but Jacob, who had become Israel, wanted his sons and Joseph's sons to be included in the Blessings of God.

Jacob was cheated in marriage. Indignation seized Jacob a lot. Actually, he was treated badly in his marriages. Treated badly by distant family, his father, his mother, and his brother. Jacob knew the death of the woman he treasured, who brought trouble upon them. His family knew favoritism. Encountered rape. They warred over justice. His son slept with one of his wives. And his own children conspired to say his son was dead. He left the promised land and still believed as he died - God was in Charge. And blessings were to be - bestowed - gifted - given - lovingly adopting Joseph's children. And saying, with belief, amazing things were still to come.

Remember your word to your servant, in which you have made me hope. Abraham believed and this is credited to him as righteousness. Blessings were increased as Jacob displayed the greatest of these is Love.

Jesus created awe and wonder as He walked along this life. He saw the futility in law bearing above Love. He saw the sadness in easy breezy pleasy and unkindness of lack of law and structure. Speaking His Word:

Luke 18:9-13

9 He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt: 10 “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’ 

13 But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!"




Abba, Father God,

Help me to be one of that number. In the Highest Name of Jesus. 

Dwell in us,  Reach past our brim, help Love flow shaken and running over!
Help us seek You first.
Dwell in those we Love, help them to brim with Your Love.
In this Way, Truth and Life
we will see more Heaven upon earth,
Your Good Creation.


Fill us with Hope and Love and Joy.
Bless our Nation in Jesus Christ.

Let us turn away,
not clickbait the things unappealing to You,
Turn us to Blessings and Building instead.
Our media statistics change, 
help us direct Your Love to our news.

Our Alleluia in Jesus Christ.
Amen
