Oh, the Places You Will Go. 

This week the WSJ had a headline story about adult children abandoning parents now moving past politics into epidemic.

Let's talk.

In 1993, my mother had a wonderful career with Ebby Halliday in Dallas as her assistant for 31 years. One of the benefits was tickets to any and every event for a good cause in Dallas.  My husband let me roam with my mother as his love for his sons and for me as a stay at home mom. These tickets brought us into contact with people my mother and I had known in Dallas for decades and decades.

One evening we were at a charitable event market, looking at the items for sale. We ran into our across-the-street neighbor.  A pseudonym for her name, Lyndy Lukestic. Lyndy had lived across the street from our home since 1956. Lyndy said to me, you know, Trooper on our street. I said yes, since about 1968. He was an early childhood friend of mine, and not. And we got along better as teenagers after we returned from Pennsylvania.

Lyndy's next question was, would you like it if I left you my house?  

I was aghast.  Why? Lyndy's face changed to one of controlled non-emotion, and she said, My 2 sons don't need my house.  I asked her, Lindy, why would you pick me?  She said she had watched me with Trooper, one evening on the corner under our shared streetlamp.

Our teenage years, I had talked to Trooper for about 2 hours. And Trooper was telling me his dealer was stopping by on the corner. He wanted me to leave immediately. I said no, he needed more life and fewer substances. He would go further. We ended up having a great evening sitting on the curb under the streetlight.  The dealer had skipped by without stopping. And then, about the second hour, Trooper was pretty angry to realize the dealer had just kept going and passed by. I said, I see you are angry, and you told me you do drugs because you are so bored. What was the best thing you did this summer week? Really. He said, Let me think about it, it was such a boring week. Trooper said, actually, it was talking to you for 2 hours. it was fun. I said, "Then thank me for giving you more life and fewer 'I have to think about it' life events." And Trooper had thanked me.

Lyndy said, I know Trooper through my sons and AA. And no one had ever attempted to get between her sons and the dealer. She wanted to reward me.

Why would Lyndy want to leave me her house? 

I asked my mother on the way home.  Lindy's sons were about 12 years older than I was and had become part of the pot crowd. But this had progressed very rapidly to addiction and heavy drug usage. It had been many years in and out of rehab, and Lindy was connected to many people who attended AA to be in sobriety. 

And as my mother and Lyndy were close through the decades, she also knew the sons had aborted every conceived grandchild. The father progressed into drug usage by way of connecting to his sons. Why Lyndy was in AA as a non-drug addict for the sobriety family support. Her sons had treated Lindy as if she was an idiot, a drudge, a useful object. A money pot.  For the years of support in and out of rehab. And when they were clean, they didn't want their mother as part of their lives. The father had died from abusive substances.  

The sons abused her so badly

They said they wanted her to die from emotional neglect to understand her abandonment.  The depths of her abandonment. Die. They said if she clung to them, she would think of them as the Menendez brothers.  Abandoned. They surely did not need a mother.  Lyndy concluded these frank talks with my mother by saying, These sweet young boys had become unborn grandbaby killers to mother killers. 

I'm glad to say I did not accept the house, and Lyndy's sons grew well again, to be her sons and heirs.

Now faith

in what we hope for

Upon Grace.

1921 Jennie and Robert Butchard of Victoria, Canada, ran out of blessings. Depleted. The limestone they had quarried in their backyard was no longer going to fund all the Victoria area construction needs. Done. Finished.

So Jennie and Robert Butchard determined to build a 55-acre garden so profound the world could visit. To give back to their community. For many years, the gardens were freely opened every afternoon, and Jennie Butchard provided tea to all who arrived for afternoon tea. In fact, as the Butchards shopped for flower varieties, their British trip was encumbered by many needs, and they accidentally missed their tickets to ride on the maiden voyage of the Titanic. 

So, you are Blessed!

But you explain your blessing as new, brand new, and that listening person frowns because you have a "New" blessing, and it isn't all that ... tremendous.  And you realize on the ladder of life you have hit upon a mid-range blessing.  Ohhhh. 

Will you now

waft

Blessing?

Then you have someone to your home, they arrive drunken, blasted to the same mid range poof blessing and they cannot do but repeat,  "You are so lucky. So lucky, how did you get so lucky."

than thinking

about what they say

HIS Garden

We belonged, once, in our 40-year marriage, to a small, regular denomination, respected church, in a good area, that said, Sell your home and donate a chunk of your profits. Don't drive a car over 26 g, it's a sin. And if they came to your home, would ask for aspects, to be given. Took it home.  The Biblical definition of corruption is to try to take a widow's house.  And then, the realtor wife, she'd try to talk the widow out of her house. Rushing in front of inheritance. Planning the disinheritance.  Our neighbors called this a cult.  We belonged to a defunct church for a year in Dallas, where all the clergy were divorced and each Sunday preached on the need for divorce.

Jesus spoke of Psalm 46.

Jesus is always with us.

Matthew 28:20 

Teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.

And behold,

I am with you always, to the end of the age.

We all have a fortress we draw around us. Or to a certain extent, should.  

It's a balance between being who we really are and making sure we aren't the one on the end of a scam. Or being the balloon. Of a hater being hateful, to see what punctured balloon will fly the furthest. 

The best walls of being adept at being a player... is the fortress that rots from within. The story created 'that' becomes the holding cell. 

And not to wear our heart on our sleeve. Because we need the faith to pull us to Rise up. Remembering God hasn't dropped us on our head.  Overcoming is part of life and the trouble's always popping up. It is part of life to not be a wet blanket. To be the Heaven on earth. Yet balancing being real. 

Where do we see this the most? 

I'm looking at 2025 Reviews! Some of it is fun. Really Fun!!!! 

But some of this is for 14-year-olds.  Gad, Are We Really Seen Collectively as fourteen-year-olds?  GASP.  

(Hey, this isn't wise. We aren't really making that many 14-year-olds. Because if we were, the movie theaters wouldn't look the way they do.)

Hey. I really did NOT know this was Lady Gaga's Year.  This was the year that everyone watched the football games to see if Taylor was holding hands and what she had on. Because I was perfectly willing to pay a fee not to hear about Lively vs Baldoni. Really if work is that bad, quit. Quit telling me. Quit telling this.  And I don't have kids and have not seen the singing Anime movie. Not once, not 24 times.  Ok. Why not. And Furbies again. Ok.

Let's find what walls we can peer into and see.
