John 10:33-35
33 “We are not stoning You for any good work,” said the Jews, “but for blasphemy, because You, who are a man, declare Yourself to be God.”
34 Jesus replied, “Is it not written in your Law: ‘I have said you are gods’? 35 If he called them gods to whom the word of God came—and the Scripture cannot be broken."
There are a few Words in the Scriptures we don't use often. And two I'm thinking of today begin with "B". Behold. I love this word. Filled with God saying, "It is Good!" Wonder and Appreciation.
The other word is Blasphemy. When we used this word - usually we are smiling. I read this passage in 2007 and thought to myself, "Wow, when we see answered prayer (in Jesus' Name) - we are gods." I promptly came down with vertigo and was quite ill. I didn't feel blasphemous at the time I thought it - this was a passing thought. However, vertigo will get your attention. And this Scripture has caused me to think of it more than a few times.
Jesus is quoting from God's Law - His Word, Psalm 82
A Psalm of Asaph.
1 God has taken his place in the divine council;
in the midst of the gods he holds judgment:
2 “How long will you judge unjustly
and show partiality to the wicked? Selah
3 Give justice to the weak and the fatherless;
maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute.
4 Rescue the weak and the needy;
deliver them from the hand of the wicked.”
5 They have neither knowledge nor understanding,
they walk about in darkness;
all the foundations of the earth are shaken.
6 I said, “You are gods,
sons of the Most High, all of you;
7 nevertheless, like men you shall die,
and fall like any prince.”
8 Arise, O God, judge the earth;
for you shall inherit all the nations!
This is the meaning, my opinion of the word 'gods',
Matthew 13
16 Blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear.
17 For truly, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.
The King of Glory and the Beautiful Gate.
Luke 10:23
Then Jesus turned to the disciples and said privately, "Blessed are the eyes that see what you see."
When Jesus died, multitudes of women arrived to mourn. God's Only Son was about to die. Multitudes had followed Jesus and His Love, Mercy and Compassion from the first day of His Ministry because the blind saw. The deaf heard. The lame walked. And the Poor had Good News preached to them. Emmanuel God with us.
Luke 23
26 And as they led him away, they seized one Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and laid on him the cross, to carry it behind Jesus.
there followed him a great multitude of the people and of women who were mourning and lamenting for him. 28 But turning to them Jesus said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 For behold, the days are coming when they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren and the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’ 30 Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’ 31For if they do these things when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?”
All things could have happened when the Author of Life, our Righteousness was killed. All the miracles could have evaporated like the Dead Sea. The Light of the world stopped and the world was in darkness. This might have continued across the earth. The earth did quake. We know this from history. The mountains could have fallen.
Jesus was truly killed in neither knowledge nor understanding. We could have been left and abandoned to walk about in darkness -forever. And all the foundations of the earth could have been shaken.
Instead, we have God's Greatest Miracle:
32 Two others, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him. 33 And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on his right and one on his left.
34 And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”
Surely mankind was blessed to see these acts of God are gods. Millenniums of mankind wanted to see the Messiah walk as truth and grace. The People of God, sons and daughters of the Most High, continued to see, continued to hear, continued to be alive, continued to walk, continued to be cleansed. Because of the Mercy of God's Only Son - Jesus Christ.
