David lived in Ziklag - so awful - it couldn't be a cave - it's more of a natural ditch. This is where his family was kidnapped. While David was out earning a living as a mercenary.
Psalm 40
To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.1 I waited patiently for the LORD; he inclined to me and heard my cry.
2 He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.
3 He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the LORD.
4 Blessed is the man who makes the LORD his trust, who does not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after a lie!
5 You have multiplied, O LORD my God, your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us; none can compare with you!
I will proclaim and tell of them, yet they are more than can be told.
6 In sacrifice and offering you have not delighted,
but you have given me an open ear.
Burnt offering and sin offering you have not required.
7 Then I said, "Behold, I have come; in the scroll of the book it is written of me: 8 I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart." 9 I have told the glad news of deliverance in the great congregation; behold, I have not restrained my lips, as you know, O LORD. 10 I have not hidden your deliverance within my heart; I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation; I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness from the great congregation.
11 As for you, O LORD, you will not restrain your mercy from me;
your steadfast love and your faithfulness will ever preserve me!
12 For evils have encompassed me beyond number; my iniquities have overtaken me, and I cannot see;
they are more than the hairs of my head; my heart fails me.
13 Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me!
O LORD, make haste to help me!
14 Let those be put to shame and disappointed altogether who seek to snatch away my life;
let those be turned back and brought to dishonor who delight in my hurt!
15 Let those be appalled because of their shame who say to me, "Aha, Aha!"
16 But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you;
may those who love your salvation say continually, "Great is the LORD!"
17 As for me, I am poor and needy, but the Lord takes thought for me. You are my help and my deliverer; do not delay,
O my God!
Obviously, David has shot way past being anointed of God. Certainly a hopeless case. The criminals and malcontents were the only people who traveled with David.
Let's look at some of the disastrous - not pleasing to God - losing moments:
Losing his friendship with the Prince of Israel. Jonathon.
Eating the shewbread and all the priests who helped - were murdered.
Living in a cave. With more criminals. Having to figure out how to hide his family.
Loosing his first wife. Marrying a widow he and his friends really needed to be fed by her. Participating in a kidnap rescue.
Seeing Saul's last son crowned after Saul died with his friend Jonathon. 22 years as a criminal. Seeing Saul's Concubines sons crowned. Realizing his anointing was not working out.
Psalm 33:11
The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.
Jesus said this of hopelessness.
Luke 11:8
I tell you, even though he will not get up to provide for him because of his friendship,
yet because of the man's persistence, he will get up and give him as much as he needs.
David might disagree with Jesus - they could debate - the man with 10 talents believed the Master was Good.
1 Timothy 4
10 That is why we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God,
who is the Savior of all people,
and especially of those who believe.
Father God,
Because of Your Blessing - we live, move and have our being.
Before we were born - You knew our days and called our name. Psalm 139 and Ephesians 3. You have said Your thoughts about one of Your beloved Children - is more than the grains of sand. Your Plan of Salvation is God of Encouragement and Love. Your Word upholds the Universe. A day to You is thousands of years.
You have said when 2 or 3 gather in Your Name - You are there. And at times David - like Jesus prayed alone. Father, Son and Holy Spirit are one. And when we Love Your Will, You abide in us. Father - You do more than we could ask or even imagine.
When we pray with the Beloved around the earth asking for more Heaven on earth, we have reached for the Heart and Love Jesus told us of in our Father. We cover all our cares with the Name of Jesus. This covers our work, our family, our health, the people we pray for and have been asked to pray for.
We pray for the Nation and include all the ways a Nation would work and prosper and strive. We pray for God's Heaven on earth in our Nation and for the Nations trusting in God.
When we pray for the people we Love we cover all of the people we love and pray for. All of their cherished hopes and cares. We cover the past, today and tomorrow as we speak the Words Jesus taught us about Heaven on earth.
We place all of our hopes, loves and care in Your Loving and Willing Heart - we thank You for Your Love.
In Jesus Christ. Amen.
