1 Chronicles 4:9-10
Jabez was more honorable than his brothers; and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, “Because I bore him in pain.”
10 Jabez called upon the God of Israel, saying, “Oh that you would bless me and enlarge my border, and that your hand might be with me, and that you would keep me from harm so that it might not bring me pain!”
And God granted what he asked.
We as humans are designed to survey and learn.
God gave us His Word and we learn from other people and their lives and their own histories.
For a number of years I worked in Pro Life and in Bible Studies and Churches have learned from others.
One of the most significant stories, I want to share with you as I thought of life and difficulties, today.
A much younger woman, in her late 20s, I had known for several years came and sat with me one morning, and she said I looked worried. I said I had several things on my mind.
She said did she ever tell me about her adventures in going to college several states away. I said no. We will call her Lily.
Lily went off far off to college because she was tired of her family. Tired of the discord. She chose a University of a different type background from her parents. Where everything was freedom. And in the middle of figuring out what freedom and life was to Lily, she was asked to visit home. She got on a plane one weekend. When she got home, her entire family was there, brother, father, mother and grandmother. They had decided it was time to tell her she was adopted. This explained some distance and discord in her family. She was asked by one of her parents to never discover her birth parents and guilted.
By the time Lily was seated on the plane, what she really was angry at a lifetime of hidden lies. And she was now even more confused about freedom and life. She said she was connected to what? What family? What nation? What system of ideals? What Freedom? And Lily set about at being in sobriety - never. And not answering any phone calls.
Lily, then, was never in her dorm as she was getting - around. Soon her parents were furious with her and were talking of cutting off funding if she did not appear quickly to them. Instead, Lily tossed her phone, got rid of her troubled college roommate and began to live in her car. It was to her - freedom. Without a phone, she was picked up by police, suddenly she had help phoning home. The Police did phone her home. Her parents arrived to find her quite different and with a drunk or something in public. Underage. Flunked out. Living in her car. Proclaiming her new and multiple freedoms. Trying all types of drugs and people. Hideously angry. Being underage, she was returned to her home state and put in Rehab on numerous medications. Her diagnosis was in the horribly severe range. Her family did believe she was in the never to be cured or ok range again.
And this led to many and increasing medications, numerous doctors with ideas about freedoms, and more medications from several doctors. Self-esteem in the dumpster. Lily now believed she would never be able to live independently. Living in a car is homelessness and if this is your willing choice - you are way wacked.
One day, her mother's mother came to visit her. And asked her if she'd ever cared for her mother. Her grandmother said, I'm not sure I care for her even if I love her. They both had to agree that Lily's mother believed life had offered her many disadvantages and Lily was her personal reward. Unfortunately, Lily, being Lily, never worked with her mother's idea of upwardly advancing and ballet lessons. Her adopted grandmother asked Lily if this was why Lily had picked to go so far away and never connected to a boyfriend. Lily said really, in life, she loved her grandmother and her brother and everything else fit into the category of 'borrowed'. She'd never be independent and her mother would always frown upon every natural choice Lily made.
This had been an ongoing 5 year ordeal, after the brief college experience. Her mother's mother sat and had her remember when Lily had felt secure. When they knew she was strong.
Lily said these kind words set her on a journey.
She remembered her core was with Jesus Christ. And just to remember her strength in God. To let go of the years of pain. At the beginning of this, Lily wasn't even allowed to choose her medications in her own home. Quietly, she began to decide. Quietly, she began to ask questions. Steadfastly, she returned to being reasonable with great determination. And her family, with her behavior, began to trust her.
And in Jesus, Lily found her freedom.
She had found a Church to attend. People to tell herself to as herself. Lily had found the Blessing of living without pain and without fear.
Lily expanded her boundaries and found her birth family.
One person in the family seriously objected and was dismissed. Her adoptive family learned to rejoice with her. And in this journey discovered the career she wanted and began a 4 year University, and she graduated. Her life now includes this country and her birth nation. Both families. Her grandmother and then, later, her parents all began to make the long journey to see the completed families. Both, and all, credit Jesus for reaching with great determination to make each day count in Jesus Christ. One day at a time.
