Luke 20:40-44
41 But he said to them, “How can they say that the Christ is David's son?
42 For David himself says in the Book of Psalms,
“‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand,
43 until I make your enemies your footstool.”’
44 David thus calls him Lord, so how is he his son?”
The song is a great example of the Scriptures. A rocky incline, a rough passage. Yesterday, we looked at the Blessings and - paused - in a year of great upheaval. And again, today, we climb out of this year.
Psalm 110
A Psalm of David.
The Lord says to my Lord:
“Sit at my right hand,
until I make your enemies your footstool.”
2 The Lord sends forth from Zion
your mighty scepter.
Rule in the midst of your enemies!
3 Your people will offer themselves freely
on the day of your power,
in holy garments;
from the womb of the morning,
the dew of your youth will be yours.
4 The Lord has sworn
and will not change his mind,
“You are a priest forever
after the order of Melchizedek.”
5 The Lord is at your right hand;
he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath.
6 He will execute judgment among the nations,
filling them with corpses;
he will shatter chiefs
over the wide earth.
7 He will drink from the brook by the way;
therefore he will lift up his head.
Living Water the renewal of blessings. Even when the road is filled with large obstacles. The Lord God doesn't sugar coat the difficulty.
Here is the Overview
Jesus drew from all the Words of God. He didn't flout great Scripture knowledge and the Theology of sitting at the feet of Gamaliel. Jesus explained. It's written.
We find these Verses are seen in Matthew 22, John 12 and Mark 12. So Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. It's somewhat rare. Why the variation in Mark 12?
Mark 12
35 And as Jesus taught in the temple, he said, “How can the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David? 36 David himself, in the Holy Spirit, declared,
“‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand,
until I put your enemies under your feet.”’
37 David himself calls him Lord. So how is he his son?” And the great throng heard him gladly.
He delighted the Crowd. Is mentioned once in the 4 Gospels.
However, all four of the Verses have Jesus in proximity to Sadducees and two times mention the Temple as the place. Why the variation? John mentions in John 21:
John 21
24 This is the disciple who is bearing witness about these things, and who has written these things, and we know that his testimony is true.
25 Now there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.
John 21 further says this:
21 After this Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples
I'd bet you, Jesus taught in the 3 years on more than one occasion about these Verses. And with all the amazing events surrounding Jesus, He would have to teach numerously to have the Disciples see and hear this. Jesus said a few times blessed are the ears and eyes that 'See'.
Momentous
Why is this so momentous.
This was definitely in the "Go To Scripture" for Jesus, Himself. Jesus truly had an arduous Ministry. When you look at the Talmud, aspersions are cast all over Mary and His Parentage. However, Biblically, twice Nazareth steps up to defend Jesus and His Family. When Jesus tells us about His Parentage, not only do we have Matthew 1 and Luke 3, we have something very important. Jesus Himself cites Psalm 110. This is for us.
David lived this and had Victory.
Jesus is delivering His Life to us on Faith.
Jesus Believes God and has God's Living Word in His Heart. Daily Jesus was fighting the Good Fight. Everyone wanted His attentions and His Blessings. Jesus even told the Great Crowd, "you just want to be fed."
Jesus is never recorded sitting down and having a good cry for Himself. Jesus Believes God His Father.
Psalm 3
O Lord, how many are my foes!
Many are rising against me;
2 many are saying of my soul,
“There is no salvation for him in God.” Selah
3 But you, O Lord, are a shield about me,
my glory, and the lifter of my head.
4 I cried aloud to the Lord,
and he answered me from his holy hill. Selah
5 I lay down and slept;
I woke again, for the Lord sustained me.
6 I will not be afraid of many thousands of people
who have set themselves against me all around.
7 Arise, O Lord!
Save me, O my God!
For you strike all my enemies on the cheek;
you break the teeth of the wicked.
8 Salvation belongs to the Lord;
your blessing be on your people!
Selah
Just as Jesus trustingly slept in the boat during a Great Storm, Jesus willingly professes His Faith. His Love. His Will. His Plan.
His Victory. Momentous.
