Joshua 10:28-43
28 As for Makkedah, Joshua captured it on that day and struck it, and its king, with the edge of the sword. He devoted to destruction every person in it; he left none remaining. And he did to the king of Makkedah just as he had done to the king of Jericho.
29 Then Joshua and all Israel with him passed on from Makkedah to Libnah and fought against Libnah. 30 And the Lord gave it also and its king into the hand of Israel. And he struck it with the edge of the sword, and every person in it; he left none remaining in it. And he did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho.
31 Then Joshua and all Israel with him passed on from Libnah to Lachish and laid siege to it and fought against it. 32 And the Lord gave Lachish into the hand of Israel, and he captured it on the second day and struck it with the edge of the sword, and every person in it, as he had done to Libnah.
33 Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish. And Joshua struck him and his people, until he left none remaining.
34 Then Joshua and all Israel with him passed on from Lachish to Eglon. And they laid siege to it and fought against it. 35 And they captured it on that day, and struck it with the edge of the sword. And he devoted every person in it to destruction that day, as he had done to Lachish.
36 Then Joshua and all Israel with him went up from Eglon to Hebron. And they fought against it 37 and captured it and struck it with the edge of the sword, and its king and its towns, and every person in it. He left none remaining, as he had done to Eglon, and devoted it to destruction and every person in it.
38 Then Joshua and all Israel with him turned back to Debir and fought against it 39 and he captured it with its king and all its towns. And they struck them with the edge of the sword and devoted to destruction every person in it; he left none remaining. Just as he had done to Hebron and to Libnah and its king, so he did to Debir and to its king.
40 So Joshua struck the whole land, the hill country and the Negeb and the lowland and the slopes, and all their kings. He left none remaining, but devoted to destruction all that breathed, just as the Lord God of Israel commanded. 41 And Joshua struck them from Kadesh-barnea as far as Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, as far as Gibeon. 42 And Joshua captured all these kings and their land at one time, because the Lord God of Israel fought for Israel. 43 Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.
This is a season for moving. My mother has moved and we are moving her household. My older son is changing from his Law School State to Colorado. My younger son is moving closer to work and to our house. The housing market is more than warm, it's hot. And we see few houses for sale, but selling quickly and moving happening around our neighborhoods.
And this brings together several of our discussions by Post recently.
The killing of a puppy Beagle for experimentation and the display of the poor puppy's death. Happiness. God's Plan for us. And new neighborhoods and expectations.
David is so factually known, now, even Goliath's hometown records King David
Richard Gere did a very graphic movie in 1985
This movie is called King David and the critics disliked seeing the type of violence Joshua 10 tells us about. However, no one really delved into the reason God called for war to make peace. That was merely brushed aside.
We might compare this to the 1987 movie Lost Boys.
Joshua 10 begins like the Eagles song, "New Kid in Town." The Exodus was quite a few New Kids in Towns and the fear of overpopulation. The Exodus Children of Israel were filled with Hope.
The Children of Israel had seen some fuss ups, dust ups, lean years, but basically good kids.
However, the Kids they were about to meet in the New Neighborhood had some particularly bad habits.
If they decided their new child was going to make an increase in the amount of crops, cash, available, the neighbors were all invited to come over to see the child strung up by the heels and throat cut to pour and then dribble over the soil to boost fertility of the crops. Not what a Good Father hopes His Young Children will engage in.
When the Children of God are told not to boil a mother with her young kid in blood and milk... you have to realize gore has its own following. And God is not just pulling ideas out of His Hat to share. God Himself launches into rules of basic human rights over slavery. Odd isn't it Former Egyptian Slaves are suddenly instructed about slavery and human rights. God knew a thing or two about the New Neighborhood. Rodney Dangerfield would say, "It's Rough Out There."
Remember Goliath.
Canaan has so much history found about the height of the people, the 'giant's' graveyard has been sought for millenniums. God was counseling His People not to be fortified just in war, but to understand the pressures the land had.
Hear, Oh Israel, The Lord Thy God is One.
The God of the Old Testament is the God of the New Testament.
Romans 14:19
So then, let us pursue what leads to peace and to mutual edification.
Hebrews 12:14
Pursue peace with everyone, as well as holiness, without which no one will see the Lord.
1 Peter 3:11
He must turn from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it.
3 John 1:11
Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. The one who does good is of God; the one who does evil has not seen God.
Psalm 37:27
Turn away from evil and do good, so that you will abide forever.
Psalm 97:10
Hate evil, O you who love the LORD! He preserves the souls of His saints; He delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
God is not God of war. God has never called for child sacrifice. Our Father God calls for the Honest Peace. God of Love, God of Encouragement. God, like Abraham and Isaac and Jacob, set up a tent for Himself during the Exodus. The Framework God is building upon is the place, of framework, where Love is fought for and Love can abide, prosper and thrive. God is the God of Pray with Hope. God of a Hope and a Future.
The Old Testament is not a vengeful God.
It wasn't a Tupperware Neighborhood. Our God calls the Heavenly Host by Name and asks His Children to seek what is Good. Baal, Aztecs, Druids, Tyr, Montu all the different names of so-called gods, were not going to hand out welcome coupons. And the dinner invitation could be very terrible.
Samson fought with those who had survived Joshua 10
Straining all his nerves, he bowed:
As with the force of winds and waters pent,
When mountains tremble, those two mossy pillars
With horrible convulsion to and fro
He tugged, he shook, till down they came, and drew
The whole roof after them, with a burst of thunder
Upon the heads of all who sat beneath,
Lords, ladies, captains, counselors, or priests,
Their choice nobility and flower.” ~
Written by Milton, Samson Agonistes
A major turning point in Israel's war against the Philistines was Samson's death. Two Philistine temples have been uncovered by archaeologists. One at Tel Qasile, in northern Tel Aviv, and one in Tel Miqne, ancient Ekron, 21 miles south of Tel Aviv. Both temples share a unique design -- the roof was supported by two central pillars! The pillars were made of wood and rested on stone support bases. With the pillars being about six feet apart, a strong man could dislodge them from their stone bases and bring the entire roof crashing down. The archaeological findings match the Biblical story perfectly and attest to the plausibility of the account.
The war wasn't frivolous or for obtuse reasons. The war was fought simply to bring the opportunity for peace.
We want to be in step with our Father God.
We want to please Abba.
To Love Abba and be loved.
Joshua 10 is the Mercy of God for the Children Unborn,
they won't have to face what Joshua and His People would have to face.
Zechariah 7:8-10
Then the word of the LORD came to Zechariah, saying,
“This is what the LORD of Hosts says:
‘Administer TRUE justice.
Show loving devotion and compassion to one another.
Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the foreigner or the poor.
And do not plot evil in your hearts against one another.’
