Not all Christians celebrate Lent, it's not universal in the Christian faith. If we point to any Gospel idea showing us Jesus knew of Lent, what would that be?
John 11:9-16
9 Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. 10 But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.”
11 After saying these things, He said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him.”
12 The disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.”
13 Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he meant taking rest in sleep. 14 Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus has died, 15 and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”
16 So Thomas, called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples,
“Let us also go, that we may die with him.”
What would Cause Thomas to say this? When the widow of Nain received her son back, Luke 7, Jesus did this in front of a large crowd. The next 2 Gospel chapters report John the Baptist is beheaded. Herod doesn't need a Prophet rocking his Caesar supported kingdom.
When Jairus the Temple official asks for Jesus to raise his daughter back to health, she died before they arrived. Jesus, in Mark 5, raises Jairus daughter to eating instead of death, the next chapter is John the Baptist killed by Herod. Also, Nazareth rejects Jesus. The dead being raised is obviously frightening to the crowd and probably more scary than we know.
Thomas obviously felt the dead rising was a definite key to angering those in government.
How would the Lord feel about this tremendous work of Elijah, in the Holy Spirit, to be condemned? Condemning a miracle of Life from Jesus? How did Our Father feel about this? The brothers of Jesus comment:
James 1:20
For the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.
How would our Father feel?
Luke 23:50-54
50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up His Spirit.
51 And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split.
52 The tombs also were opened.
And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised,
53 and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection
they went into the holy city and appeared to many.
54 When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!”
James saw the element of God's Favor:
James 5
16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.
The prayer of a righteous man has great power to prevail.
17 Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years
Paul knew many of his prayers answered. He had this to say about sin. Maybe Paul was thinking of Job's clinging to his own righteousness with indignation. Paul said he did not always do the good that he hoped of himself. Romans 7
Psalm 19:12
Who can discern his errors?
Declare me innocent from hidden faults.
The Lord would want us to pray all the time. Why?
