Fountains Abbey, England
Isaiah 55:1-4
“Come, everyone who thirsts,
come to the waters;
and he who has no money,
come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
without money and without price.
2 Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread,
and your labor for that which does not satisfy?
Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good,
and delight yourselves in rich food.
3 Incline your ear, and come to me;
hear, that your soul may live;
and I will make with you an everlasting covenant,
my steadfast, sure love for David.
4 Behold, I made him a witness to the peoples,
a leader and commander for the peoples.
The History of the faith and faithful is as engaging as the stories of David. The United Kingdom has seen 2 thousand years of the rise and fall of the Glories of History.
For the last week, I have been absolutely, totally taken with "The Secrets of Historic Britain" from the National Trust and with Alan Titchmarsh. The compassion has been beyond what we have witnessed surrounding History in this era. I am seriously and completely impressed. Histories fall and rise, have failures and, with the Hope of mankind in their Light, rise again. But this. This is clear eyed understanding of the frailties of mankind, with their Hope.
Honest History with Compassion. Presented with such parallels. More, please.
Fountains Abbey was one of the splendors of The UK as Henry VIII cast his eye on the fortunes of the English Church under Catholicism. And in destroying the Catholic Abbeys, England's death rate changed completely. 1 in 3 would starve to death. The Abbeys were the reliable farms producing meals. Hospitals for the sick. And would teach reading and become educators after the Black Plagues. As Fountain Abbey was destroyed, the invention of using water for farm industrialization was set back. Water purification was set aside. Life expectancy fell again.
Alan Titchmarsh examines the treasures of the National Trust with benevolence, empathy, grace, humanity, kindness and mercy.
1783 was the beginning of Industrialization. We see this type of building in Augusta, Georgia, USA from before the Civil War.
To look at the Industrialization of Cotton Mills beginning in Manchester in 1783. Run by... children. This is dealt with to inspire us to see the welfare of children in a whole new and profound light. This is a world, we have forgotten.
I just knew immediately, with the first episode, I'd encountered something of world-class historical interest. The fall and rise of many.
Amos 5:24
Let justice roll down like waters,
and righteousness
like an ever-flowing stream.
Take for example, Thomas Legh.
Born 1793, to the parlor maid of Lyme Park's 400-year history. His father realized his 7 illegitimate children didn't equal one heir. His new heir was to adopt his firstborn son. Thomas Legh worked all his life to remember his family and their contributions to their nation, with unique effort. He avoided updating the grounds, to reveal one of the few houses left with medieval architecture.
We remember Lyme Park as the house of Mr Darcy in the 1995 film Pride and Prejudice, starring Colin Firth.
Lyme Park as one of the most remarkable books held by the National Trust.
King Henry VIII decided to just erase all the portions of English History he personally didn't care for. And this is the prayer of the Saint Thomas Becket. Recorded by the Lyme Park patrons to express their desire for History to be whole. Honest.
Astonishing.
And to find a shoe in the walls of Attingham Hall.
This shoe hasn't been seen since Charles I or Charles II was on the throne. 1625.
The Reformation was a catastrophe. Starvation. Theft. Ruin. Yet, a new Chapter. Overcoming
ecclesiastical corruption to do something new.
And in the Georgian area, Fountains Abbey became such a garden. This is a World Heritage List.
John 1:1-5
In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
2 He was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made through Him,
and without Him was not any thing made that was made.
4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.
5 The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness has not overcome it.
Matthew 5:6
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
Matthew 10:8
Heal the sick, raise the dead,
cleanse the lepers, drive out demons.
Freely you have received; freely give.
John 4:14
But whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst.
Indeed, the water I give him
will become in him
a fount of water
springing up to eternal life."
John 7:37
On the last day of the feast,
the great day,
Jesus stood up and cried out,
“If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.
38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said,
‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’”
