Matthew 1:18-24
Now the birth of Jesus Christ [the Christ] took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed [engaged] to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. 19 And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. 20 But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:
23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). (Isaiah 7:14)
24When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife!
Jesus is the Greek version of the Hebrew name Joshua, meaning 'God is salvation'.
Mary had choices, the angel heard Mary agree to God's plan.
Joseph, also, had choices multiplying after looking for compassion.
Jesus had choices as well. The Pharisees wonder if Jesus will flee - what choices Jesus would make. Jesus was asked for an interview by Greek Jews of Crete - Cretans have a reputation for laziness and gluttony - perhaps they heard Jesus was an eater and drinker - they wanted Jesus on Crete. Titus was one of the 72 disciples and Titus lived to be quite old according to old Church histories - the age of 94 as Bishop of Crete.
Jesus was walking a different path. One of Salvation.

Jesus, being in the world, was presented with options. Jesus, being God, wanted to fulfill God's plan of salvation. Because Jesus is our atonement, He is our Messiah.
