2 Samuel 12:1-25 ~ The Lord sent Nathan to David

2 Samuel 12:1-25

And the Lord sent Nathan to David.

He came to him and said to him, “There were two men in a certain city, the one rich and the other poor. 2 The rich man had very many flocks and herds, 3 but the poor man had nothing but one little ewe lamb, which he had bought. And he brought it up, and it grew up with him and with his children. It used to eat of his morsel and drink from his cup and lie in his arms, and it was like a daughter to him.

4 Now there came a traveler to the rich man, and he was unwilling to take one of his own flock or herd to prepare for the guest who had come to him, but he took the poor man's lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to him.” 5 Then David's anger was greatly kindled against the man, and he said to Nathan, “As the Lord lives, the man who has done this deserves to die, 6 and he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.”

7 Nathan said to David, “You are the man! Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you out of the hand of Saul.

8 And I gave you your master's house and your master's wives into your arms and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah.

And if this were too little, I would add to you as much more.

9 Why have you despised the word of the Lord, to do what is evil in his sight?

You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and have taken his wife to be your wife and have killed him with the sword of the Ammonites. 10 Now therefore the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised me and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.’ 11 Thus says the Lord, ‘Behold, I will raise up evil against you out of your own house. And I will take your wives before your eyes and give them to your neighbor, and he shall lie with your wives in the sight of this sun.

12 For you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel and before the sun.’”

13 David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.”

And Nathan said to David, “The Lord also has put away your sin; you shall not die. 14 Nevertheless, because by this deed you have utterly scorned the Lord, the child who is born to you shall die.”

15 Then Nathan went to his house.

And the Lord afflicted the child that Uriah's wife bore to David, and he became sick. 16 David therefore sought God on behalf of the child.

And David fasted and went in and lay all night on the ground. 17 And the elders of his house stood beside him, to raise him from the ground, but he would not, nor did he eat food with them. 18 On the seventh day the child died.

And the servants of David were afraid to tell him that the child was dead, for they said, “Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spoke to him, and he did not listen to us. How then can we say to him the child is dead? He may do himself some harm.”

19 But when David saw that his servants were whispering together, David understood that the child was dead. And David said to his servants, “Is the child dead?”

 They said, “He is dead.”

20 Then David arose from the earth and washed and anointed himself and changed his clothes. And he went into the house of the Lord and worshiped.

He then went to his own house. And when he asked, they set food before him, and he ate.

21 Then his servants said to him, “What is this thing that you have done? You fasted and wept for the child while he was alive; but when the child died, you arose and ate food.”

22 He said, “While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept, for I said, ‘Who knows whether the Lord will be gracious to me, that the child may live?’

23 But now he is dead. Why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me.”

24 Then David comforted his wife, Bathsheba, and went in to her and lay with her, and she bore a son, and he called his name Solomon.

And the Lord loved him

25 and sent a message by Nathan the prophet. So he called his name Jedidiah, [Beloved of the Lord] because of the Lord.

There isn't a soul who loves the Bible, who does not know and feel understood by this Chapter, written by Samuel in the Holy Spirit, in His Second Book of Samuel. Fittingly placed in Chapter 12. We are warmed by this so much we all raise up our hearts and say, "Send me! I want to be the Lord's Disciple."

These Living Words of God are the antidote to asking God, "Please send me an Angel of the Lord to understand."

If we were to say to the Lord God, the Almighty, the Ancient of Days, "What is the Salvation the prophets asked about and angels longed to look?" This Chapter answers the Heart coming to the Lord, Abba, Father. This Chapter is about the Lord's Greatest Work, Salvation.

The heart returning to Love. Coming out of the cold.

The first Chapter in any Book in the Word of God is interesting. And the first Sentence is always going to be a complete attention getter.

The Lord sent Nathan to David

Attention getter. Judge not lest ye be judged.  Heart. Understanding Heart. David has met every aspect of mankind in this Chapter and David has met the Lord filled with Love and Wisdom.  David has an autopsy done on his soul. Tenderly like a Father.  David has understood what he knew and hoped not to see. The Word of God calls this why we despise the Word of God, verse 8. The inner workings are made to be the path. The Way, The Truth, The Life.

David is a man who has been a mercenary, spared kings and princes, killed for a way to make a living. Crowned king of Israel in stages, 4 times, having every ounce of faith he has tested by God. David has plenty of children, plenty of wives.  David is each of us. We understand David.

There isn't a better and more profound conversation with an Archangel. Because there is no need to say to Nathan, "Fear Not." And in one of the most beloved passages of Scripture, we see why God sends His Only Son to save the world in Jesus Christ.

David has come face to face with the messenger of God. David has sinned against the Lord. David, king and shepherd, sits with Abba to see his own soul. Our David has emotions and deliberate action. David fasted and laid on the ground. David arose from the earth and washed and anointed himself and changed his clothes. And he went into the house of the Lord and worshiped.

He said, “While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept, for I said, ‘Who knows whether the Lord will be gracious to me, that the child may live?’ 23 But now he is dead. Why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me.”

Accepting the Will of the Lord. Allowing God to be Almighty. In David's comfort, he comforted, and life made a new path in the Lord's Graciousness. Love found new paths and new footholds.

he shall restore the lamb fourfold

Home.

This Chapter is about Salvation. There are unique aspects to the Second Book of Samuel 12.

The Lord sent Nathan. What happened to Nathan?
It could have gone 'badly' for Nathan. Some of the words Nathan used were: Rich and poor. Labels. Children were mentioned, daughter of the heart. The heart has an intimate look in the warmth and richness of life within families, where we live and move and have our being. The people God has given us.

Ewe lamb. Brought it up, and it grew up with him and with his children. It used to eat of his morsel and drink from his cup and lie in his arms, and it was like a daughter to him.

Broaden the field. The size and scope of Life:
Master's house and your master's wives into your arms and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah.

Words of intent:
Traveler, took, prepared, killed. Deserves to die. No pity. Anointed. Delivered. Hand of Saul. Gave, gave? Too little. Would have given more. Despised the word of the Lord, to do what is evil in his sight?

God is in the House and His anger is about. God does not refrain from anger. The Word of God gives permission. Be angry and do not sin. God understands anger. Because God is merciful. Acting past anger into forgiveness. Real. Real Scripture. Real events. Tel Dan Stele, Archaeology.  God deals with anger and mentions anger more than 400 times in Scriptures. And then add on the implications of the word anger. And the count goes higher. Something pandemic years want to know about - anger. Forgiveness and mercy.

What was going to happen to Nathan? Nathan put his life on his line, bravely.
Nathan went home. The whole passage is about going Home. Just like Jeremiah, the men of God are not forgotten. Those with faith? Without faith, it is impossible to please Him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him. Charles Wesley knew and understood that in faith, we want to know what happened to Nathan. Because we aren't just David, we are Nathan. Charles Wesley famously said, "God buries His workman but carries on His work."

Nathan went home. The Scriptures repeat and repeat. Jeremiah bought a home. God tells us He rescued Jeremiah and Jeremiah lived. Samuel was given a home, we can visit in Israel today. In the Old Testament, the corruption of the Rabbi is defined as taking the house of a widow. Elijah went forth higher.  Elijah went home with a Chariot. Proving, people don't just understand having a beloved, beloved pet. Like a daughter. They want to know horses live in Heaven and come forth to rescue Elijah to God's Kingdom. Alive Word. Alive God. God of the Living. Power in the Scriptures. God buries His workman but carries on His work. Living Word Alive for millenniums. The Word of God will never fail.

Home.
He then went to his own house.

He then went to His own House

Matthew 13:31,32

Jesus put before them another parable: “The Kingdom of Heaven
is like a mustard seed that a man planted in his field.

Although it is the smallest of all seeds,
yet it grows into the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree,
so that the birds of the air come
and
nest in its branches.”

We believe Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He has saved all who call upon His name and rely on Him for His Grace. The Scriptures are living & active and are for understanding the Lord Almighty. Biblical readings are chosen from the Ecumenical Christian Church and the Nicene Council, 325 A.D., approved Apocrypha. People remember not just from reading, but by sight and orally- an image has been added as well as audio readings. About Me

My photo
Email registry at bottom.! “All Scripture is inspired by God” (2 Timothy 3:16). Men “moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God” (2 Peter 1:21). The Holy Spirit carried men along, moving and guiding them as they wrote in their own words what God wanted them to say. The Bible is unique; comprised of 80 separate books, & written over a period of thousands of years by more than 40 writers with one Author, spanning the centuries, different states of peace & war & different situations in life. The Bible answers the question: of who is God, who is man & what can their relationship can be. Although the Bible was written on perishable material and copied by hand for many centuries, its accuracy is not in doubt, proven by Dead Sea Scrolls and papyrus from 2,000 years. The Bible has survived persecution & criticism to be read with great interest in each generation. The Bible gives witness to the greatness of the Creator. A loving Father concerned for all of his creation. With each verse of the bible witnessing to God is love and the multitude & vastness of His attributes. The Bible was written for you. <><
