John 3
2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him."
3 Jesus answered him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God."
Nicodemus said to him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?" 5 Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7 Do not marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born again.' 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit."
9 Nicodemus said to him, "How can these things be?"
10 Jesus answered him, "Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these things?
11 Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but you do not receive our testimony.
In 2016, we had an optimism. The Pew Report said 81% of the USA prayed and believed they knew an absolute miracle in their lives, only brought about by God, who Loves them.
Then 2020, the internet reported an astonishing number of people reading the Scriptures.
Now, 2022, we have a lag reported. Sort of. It's reported badly and says, "Orthodox Christians grow in number, up 6% while all other Churches report down in attendance." No, it's not people with tassels. These are Churches who hold fast to the faith of the Word of God.
When asked if people are born again, most people would like some privacy. The truth is, for the last 12 years, Churches grow when faith in the Scriptures is held fast. Born again.... is the people who have changed Churches they were born into, to find true faith.
John 3 is important.
Nicodemus has so many attitudes put around him for approaching Jesus at night. The chapter is deeply about being born again. Nicodemus has questions about Jesus. He doesn't approach Peter or the Disciples. Boldly and with caution, all of his perceptions alert and ready, Nicodemus seeks, finds, questions Jesus and expects honest answers. Jesus is just a bit sassy. Boldly, Jesus does not woo Nicodemus, instead Jesus expects Nicodemus to have personal wisdom and realize Nicodemus has some hollow aspects within. While telling Nicodemus to be born again, Jesus is speaking to a mature adult with life skills and knowledge.
Why does Jesus bother. Nicodemus has a full and large position in life. His own opinions.
Luke 13:31-34
31 At that very hour some Pharisees came, and said to him, "Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you."
32 And he said to them, "Go and tell that fox, `Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I finish my course. 33 Nevertheless I must go on my way today and tomorrow and the day following; for it cannot be that a prophet should perish away from Jerusalem.'
