Acts 5 ~ speak in the name of Jesus

Acts 5

But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property, ² and with his wife’s knowledge he kept back for himself some of the proceeds and brought only a part of it and laid it at the apostles’ feet. ³ But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land? ⁴ While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God." 

⁵ When Ananias heard these words, he fell down and breathed his last. And great fear came upon all who heard of it. ⁶ The young men rose and wrapped him up and carried him out and buried him.

⁷ After an interval of about three hours his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. ⁸ And Peter said to her, "Tell me whether you sold the land for so much." And she said, "Yes, for so much." ⁹ But Peter said to her, "How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out."

¹⁰ Immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. When the young men came in they found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her beside her husband. ¹¹ And great fear came upon the whole church and upon all who heard of these things.

¹² Now many signs and wonders were regularly done among the people by the hands of the apostles. And they were all together in Solomon’s Portico. ¹³ None of the rest dared join them, but the people held them in high esteem. ¹⁴ And more than ever believers were added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women, ¹⁵ so that they even carried out the sick into the streets and laid them on cots and mats, that as Peter came by at least his shadow might fall on some of them. ¹⁶ The people also gathered from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those afflicted with unclean spirits, and they were all healed.




¹⁷ But the high priest rose up, and all who were with him (that is, the party of the Sadducees), and filled with jealousy ¹⁸ they arrested the apostles and put them in the public prison. 

¹⁹ But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said, ²⁰ "Go and stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this Life."

²¹ And when they heard this, they entered the temple at daybreak and began to teach.

Now when the high priest came, and those who were with him, they called together the council and all the senate of the people of Israel and sent to the prison to have them brought. ²² But when the officers came, they did not find them in the prison, so they returned and reported, ²³ "We found the prison securely locked and the guards standing at the doors, but when we opened them we found no one inside." ²⁴ Now when the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were greatly perplexed about them, wondering what this would come to. ²⁵ And someone came and told them, "Look! The men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people." 

²⁶ Then the captain with the officers went and brought them, but not by force, for they were afraid of being stoned by the people.

²⁷ And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest questioned them, ²⁸ saying, "We strictly charged you not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you intend to bring this man’s blood upon us." 

²⁹ But Peter and the apostles answered, "We must obey God rather than men. ³⁰ The God of our fathers raised Jesus, whom you killed by hanging him on a tree. ³¹ God exalted him at his right hand as Leader and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. ³² And we are witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him."

³³ When they heard this, they were enraged and wanted to kill them. 

³⁴ But a Pharisee in the council named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law held in honor by all the people, stood up and gave orders to put the men outside for a little while. 

³⁵ And he said to them, "Men of Israel, take care what you are about to do with these men. ³⁶ For before these days Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody, and a number of men, about four hundred, joined him. He was killed, and all who followed him were dispersed and came to nothing. ³⁷ After him Judas the Galilean rose up in the days of the census and drew away some of the people after him. He too perished, and all who followed him were scattered. ³

⁸ So in the present case I tell you, keep away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or this undertaking is of man, it will fail; ³⁹ but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You might even be found opposing God!" So they took his advice

⁴⁰ And when they had called in the apostles, they beat them and charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. 

⁴¹ Then they left the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name. ⁴² And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.

Why were the events of the early Church so much more astonishing than the everyday Church of today. 

To non-believers, this is just fairy tales - as believers we know the witnesses of Jesus and these days died for their Lord and belief in Him. Josephus was astonished and wrote his words of amazement that Jesus must be the Christ, His followers continue to follow Him and call themselves Christians "to this day." And of course, this is debated. Some say yes on this history and others say fairy tale.  The Roman Historian Josephus goes on to record James as the physical brother of Christ. Perhaps Jewish Josephus, General in the Judean Army, heard the words of Gamaliel.

Going back to the question - Why were the events of the early Church so much more astonishing than the everyday Church of today? 

For most of my younger life I would have said the Holy Spirit was new. Yet this is profoundly wrong. Genesis records the Holy Spirit in the first chapter. The Spirit of God hovers over the waters. Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Many, many actions and words attest to the Spirit of God's works in the Old Testament. 

Next I would have answered, the sacrifice of Jesus was so new, the Holy Spirit was renewed. Meh. No. God tells us...

Hebrews 13:8

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

Jesus knew why and He told us.

Luke 10:23-24

Then turning to the disciples he said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see! For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.”

What are we to do, living so many physical years from the beginning of a New Covenant, a new Heaven and the brand new opportunity to have the Holy Spirit living inside of us when we believe in Jesus and call upon His name in faith?

1 Peter 1:10-11

Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke of the grace that was to come to you, searched intently and with the greatest care, trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow.

An important question to follow - did Jesus say the glories would end?

Far from it.

John 20:29

Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen Me? Blessed are those who have not seen

and yet have believed.”

Matthew 13:16

Blessed are your eyes because they see, 

and your ears because they hear.

Today!

1 Peter 1:8

Though you have not seen Him, you love Him; and even though you do not see Him now, you believe in Him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy,

 for you are receiving the goal of your faith, 

the salvation of your souls.

The years have rolled by... 2,000 of them !....

Romans 8:39

Neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that 

is 

in Christ Jesus our Lord.

And what about this passage as the reason for all the slow down in GLORY?

1 Corinthians 13:8

Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

Jesus would have said - what did HE say First - LOVE NEVER FAILS

For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when perfection comes, 

the imperfect disappears.

How. How will we reawaken these glories. Beloved, the truth is they have not ended. I have witnessed 5 absolute miracles of the God Almighty in my first 5 decades. Miracles of health, in others, the doctors could not accept without saying it is a miracle. And the complete truth is that many more miracles and answered prayers have occurred without being aware of them. Gratitude and awe lead to awareness.

Where is the Awakening? Within you. We must live it.

Luke 12:31

But seek His Kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.

Matthew 6:33

But seek first His Kingdom and His Righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

Matthew 17:20

Jesus replied, "Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there' and it will move. 

Nothing will be impossible for you."

LOVE NEVER FAILS

Matthew 28:20

Teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. 

And 

Behold, 

I am with you always, to the end of the age

The end of the age - we will see...

Matthew 24:31

And He will send His angels with a loud trumpet call, 

and 

they will gather 

His Elect from the four winds, 

from one end of the Heavens to the other.

1 Peter 4:11

If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. 

To Him be the glory 

and 

the power for ever and ever.

Amen.

Romans 8:28 

And we know 

that for those who love God 

all things 

work together for good, 

for those who are called 

according to His Purpose.

Abba, Father,

Who redeems your life from the pit

and crowns you 

with love and compassion

With Your Help, 

believing Jesus walks on water.

Dwell in me,

Dwell in us,

Dwell in those we Love,

Help us to seek You first.

And we will finish well, in Jesus Christ. 

HEAL OUR NATION

For Children in their Schools, all safety.

For those who protect and defend the USA,

protect us from evil.

Let evil and practicing evil

depart far from us

and our children.

Thank You, Father,

for Your Good Will.

And hearing our prayers.

Keep our food supply safe.

Support the Police.

For Worldwide Peace.

And the Peace of Israel. 

Those who protect

and defend

All The Word of God.

Freedom in our Churches.

Wholeness

Holy.

Goodness.

And the Nations of the world,

Your Good Creation,

Calling upon You.

O LORD Our Lord God, Almighty

and

 Governor of our souls, 

Whose Glory 

is in 

all 

the world

 We commend this nation 

to Thy merciful care, 

that being guided by Thy Providence, 

we may dwell secure 

in Thy peace. 

Grant to 

THE PRESIDENT 

OF THE UNITED STATES, 

and to all 

in Authority, wisdom and strength 

to know 

and 

to do Thy Will.

God our Creator, 

help everyone to share 

in the good gifts 

You have given to us. 

May those who lead 

the nations of the world be given wisdom. 

Especially we pray for Donald, 

our  President, 

You would fill him 

with all 

the gifts and blessings 

he must have to fulfill 

the solemn task before him.
