Job 9:1-16
Job 9:1-16
Monday of Easter Week
Passover
Many Emotions run high
Jesus throws out
the Money Changers
Much more crowded than this for Passover
Generally, about 2 million people travel to Jerusalem
traveling all over the world
The Stoa is also the Roman architecture for
the First Vatican in 400 A.D.
Then Job answered and said:
2 “Truly I know that it is so:
But how can a man be in the right before God?
3 If one wished to contend with him,
one could not answer him once in a thousand times.
4 He is wise in heart and mighty in strength
—who has hardened himself against him, and succeeded?—
He who removes mountains, and they know it not,
when he overturns them in his anger,
6 who shakes the earth out of its place,
and its pillars tremble;
7 who commands the sun, and it does not rise;
who seals up the stars;
8 who alone stretched out the heavens
and trampled the waves of the sea;
9 who made the Bear and Orion,
the Pleiades and the chambers of the south;
10 who does great things beyond searching out,
and marvelous things beyond number.
11 Behold, he passes by me, and I see him not;
he moves on, but I do not perceive him.
12 Behold, he snatches away; who can turn him back?
Who will say to him, ‘What are you doing?’
13 “God will not turn back his anger;
beneath him bowed the helpers of Rahab.
14 How then can I answer him,
choosing my words with him?
15 Though I am in the right, I cannot answer him;
I must appeal for mercy to my accuser.
16 If I summoned him and he answered me,
I would not believe that he was listening to my voice.
The Disciples have been terrified, probably even before Lazarus was alive again. This is not a good week for them.
Job 9 could be the money changers, not believing God was listening to their voices. And could be the disciples on Passover week leading to the New Covenant and Good Friday.
John 9
49 John answered, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he does not follow with us.”
50 But Jesus said to him, “Do not stop him, for
the one who is not against you is for you.”
51 When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. 52 And he sent messengers ahead of him, who went and entered a village of the Samaritans, to make preparations for him.
53 But the people did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem. 54 And when his disciples James and John saw it, they said, “Lord, do you want us to tell fire to come down from heaven and consume them?”
55 But He turned and rebuked them.
You might ask me, "Aren't we doing Joy of Jesus this Lent?" Yes, this is the week, Jesus held a dinner and explained for four continuous Chapters of John's Gospel about Joy.
Jesus is cleaning House. He doesn't think His Temple in Jerusalem is doing well. A lot of us are cleaning House before Easter. And in Pandemic, there are some emotions coming to the surface.
Jesus doesn't ever engage with the Disciples and comfort them, this momentous week, until He sits for His Supper. Jesus just didn't engage with the Disciples and their 'Discomfort'. Jesus was busy doing what He needed to be ready for the week. And as He sat down, He discussed what made His Life Joy. With Realism.
Was Jesus too harsh? No. Not all the people could afford the animals they had increased the demand for. Doves were not lambs. The status of the affordability. Nahum 2 explains when God is truly angry, He does not act twice. Once is enough. Jesus merely showed them what they valued. Jesus is never recorded climbing Mount Ebal or Gerizim. Instead, Jesus is in Shechem, with the people who look to Him and His Love and mercy. Jesus tells us He asks mercy over sacrifice.
God gives more. He loves us First.
He who removes mountains,
and they know it not,
Luke 19:44
Because you did not know
the time
of your visitation.
when He overturns them in His anger,
who shakes the earth out of its place,
and its pillars tremble
who commands the sun, and it does not rise;
who seals up the stars;
who alone stretched out the heavens
Who alone stretched out the Heavens
and trampled the waves of the sea
Who made the Bear and Orion,
the Pleiades and the chambers of the south
Who does great things beyond searching out,
and marvelous things
beyond number.
