They stood still, their faces downcast.

“Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”
19 “What things?” he asked.
“About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied.
“He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. 20 The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; 21 but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel."
Israel would not be redeemed. Jesus had died horriby. The Hope Judea had for Jesus as the Messiah, the lame walk, the deaf hear, the blind see. The poor were not hoping for good news now.
1948 - The Jews had refused to walk under the Arch of Titus, believing Israel would rise from utter defeat almost 1900 years later. Correct!
God alone held the Arch of Titus to be the Gate of the Roman Empire for Jewish in dispersion to Hope in the Resurrection of Israel 2,000 Years later.
The Arch of Titus fell into the slums and became slum housing:
About 1550 AD the Pope used the Arch for Oath taking and loyalty ceremonies. And the Arch began to show deterioration.
By 1700 AD it was almost abandoned and a citizen lived in the ruins.
In 1812 the Pope decided to restore this:
