Hosea 6:3
“Let us acknowledge the LORD!
Let us press on to acknowledge Him!
As surely as the sun rises,
He will appear!
He will come to us like the winter rains,
like the spring rains
that water the earth!”
The year has progressed and we arrive in July. Houston has had milder temperatures and the UK had historic spring drought. Italy is experiencing 100' plus in June, now July.
Wherever we are in life, we trust in the Lord. And go forth.
Our backyard Water Oak passed on, and this tree was large and so appreciated. We left the trunk, carved down into the trunk into a wooden pot and planted a Palm and Caladiums.
Then we gained honey bees.
The blue pots are Home Depot pots included when buying a plant. I spray-painted them with Fusion Max, Lowe’s or Ace spray paint. I did about a dozen pots. Spritzed it with black Fusion, then spritzed with Capri Fusion and blasted this with Fusion Navy. Allowing dry times between coats. Much, far and away, very, better than the price of outdoor pots!
I had just finished re-painting the bird house. My mother's bird house and now an impromptu bee hive. These are very prolific! In 5 weeks, they have doubled and swarmed away twice. Fortunately, it looks like we have few now. Edward and I have enjoyed them. And Edward keeps a pair of binoculars at hand to see what they are doing. This week, I found him standing on the patio, and I called out to him to come inside, the bees were swarming. Edward said the noise was so unique to hear them humming. They swarmed around him and all over the yard. Eventually, he did come back inside to watch them. They calmed down. And quietly, we found in 2 days they had moved on. Leaving us just a few baby honey bees.
This year, Costco had a great price, under $80 for 6', on Red Japanese Maples. Thrilled to get two and find out how to get them in the car. Edward had bet me I could not. Victory.
Life is a garden and we look for the blessings of the season
And during drought, plan the use of water and the necessities. Overcome and gain experience. Using your coffee grounds to help trees, shrubs, flowers. And eggshells. A freezer burned fish does wonders, buried in the yard. Azomite minerals supply what we don't find in the salted, commercial fertilizers. Instead, the Big Box stores sell plain old chicken poo. The fertilizer of the ages. For Texas, Southern Ag sells fertilome, the fungus stopper. Bonide has granulated solutions for insects and disease. And if you combine Neem oil, a completely natural repellent, not abhorrent to humans, and a little malathion, you have gold.
Life is a garden, and we want all to have this abundant garden. If not sharing, what will the bee population do?
Hydrangeas and The Cost of Gardening
Hydrangeas are like Roses, the first year, is a straggler. Remove the blossoms, and essential, the Hydrangea must have afternoon shade. Water tenderly the first hot season. Do not trim back. What? Yes, do not trim back. The secret of hydrangeas, is a forest. If you take the longest stem and push it to the ground with a rock or brick, then you will have another Hydrangea the next year. And if you do decide to trim it, well, you will find, on most varieties it will not bloom. And like Jesus told us to be 'salty', Hydrangeas like a sprinkle of Epsom Salts. Occasionally. Like Roses.
This works with ferns as well, the put the branch in the dirt as seeding, trick.
Usual Roses are going to like Epsom salts. And a tiny measure of Bonide systemic fungicide granular in the spring. Knockout Roses last 10 years. Others, forever. Bonide is less expensive bought in the largest size and kept in a strong, sealed, labeled garbage bag in the house. Take the bag outside to open. It will last until used. If placed in the heat and cold, will last only one season.
The Cost of Gardening
Zinnias in sunshine are the cost of the seed packages. And the next year, the spent blooms give you thousands of seeds. Coleus, in dappled shade, is the same. Just put the seeds in a paper bag and use them, for best results, next year.
I am still trying to seed my Swamp Rose Mallow. However, my Penta became a tree. And one seeded 5 years later. The garden will yield opportunities we didn't see coming. One summer, red Penta bloomed everywhere 5 years later. Periwinkle loves to surprise with a stray plant. And Golden Sedum, always the color of early green spring.
Wood fern, in dappled to deep shade, is the most prolific. Why we see this in mass in rural forests. A dried frond of a fern with a sheet of kitchen plastic wrap will germinate a new plant. Potting soil, will gain success, if your soil isn't organic rich. Remove the sheet of plastic wrap, humidifier, within 2 weeks. Holly fern, all ferns.
The Cost of Gardening.
One flower bed at a time per year.
Painting a wooden fence, cultivates the yard and saves the wooden fence for at least 20 to 25 years. I like to use the color of the house trim or a complement color. A Neutral. And I do like the green grey or blue grey of copper patina verdigris. Painting a fence is almost as easy as painting concrete with concrete floor paint. Easy. I have painted two different yard concrete with a bright cream and it is immeasurably cleaner looking. Lasts well. It's easy and creates a feeling of having cultivated another room.
Coffee grounds! Some of the very best fertilizer, especially for the wounded tree or plant. Then stop. Eggshells and shredded newspaper plain print with leaves on top. Delight for worms.
Compost. In dry areas, a bag of grass clippings in a garbage bag hidden, will create an organic rich soil in 2 months. Incredible. Humid areas, not as easy, and you will need to purchase Nitrogen fertilizer.
How to begin a new flower bed without terrible fuss.
Boxes. Yes, the Amazon boxes don't have a lot of colored print. Home Depot moving boxes. Line the area in summer or late summer with boxes. Then Leaves or Cedar purchased Mulch. By next spring, the worms will have eaten the boxes and created incredibly rich organic mulch. The weeds and grass are gone, and the worm castings make incredibly rich, plutonium, soil. A great beginning. Cedar mulch remains for the mulch aspect of the flower bed.
Drip lines hoses or pipe. Excellent. Ease in watering, reducing the water cost, the continual feeding creates a strong garden.
If you have always wanted a fruit or nut tree, you almost waste your time unless you give your county Ag Extension a free phone call. They will tell you the variety where to grow. Then a few searches and you have the successful tree.
The nationwide blight of Pine Beetles could be solved. With Chrysanthemum Pyrethrum and a small amount of Malathion. One is harsh, one is ineffective for larvae, which makes it pointless. Together, they are the ingredient of human head lice and kill the blight of Pine Beetles. Until Pine Beetles starve to death. The reason for the solution: barren hills without protection from huge storms. Any other possibility is going to come from the Agricultural solutions of Israel.
Our flowers look good this year after an extremely unusual 3 weeks of freezing in the subtropics of Houston. 30 strings of preplanned Christmas incandescent lights and covers made all the difference. We now have a shrub or small tree sized Penta flower. With about a 1" trunk. Wow.
